45ppm is tax free for the first 10K miles then it drops to 25ppm - worth taking this into account as you'll be paying tax on the 20ppm after 10K

True - but they allow you to be self-employed as a VAT registered LTD company and charge VAT on your services (they are VAT registered so it makes no odds to them) - this means I could then get back the VAT on the fuel and servicing etc so I should be well ahead. It's still £4500 tax free plus say £2250 of which onyl half will be taxed - so that's £5600 or so tax free and only tax on £1100 or so - which will easily cover most of my annual motoring cost - including fuel and servicing etc - so I'm ok with that.

It's why I'd like to get an EV for it - my fuel is currently working out just under 0.6 pence per mile - so that £5k would pretty much cover the lease cost / insurance and everything as well on a brand new car - however as mentioned - my credit score just won't allow it...

I could just get a cheap Skoda diesel I guess... but not much love going on for that as a solution!

I've travelled in a Skoda Superb Estate and it was comfy, luxurious and quiet. I don't know how far they go back though or what they cost

It is impossible to be Self Employed as a VAT Registered Ltd company, you are an employee of that company and the sole director OR you can be self employed and VAT registered, you then need to be careful of IR35 tax rules.

The first 10k miles can be paid at 45ppm then 25ppm after and you can't claim the VAT back on fuel or servicing as the 45ppm is classed as a mileage allowance.

You are correct - what I meant was I can bill them as a VAT registered company - then pay myself as a sole director.

Surely if you have paid VAT on something (I.e. the fuel) you can recover it (apart from VAT on contract hire payments where I think you can only get 50%.

Are you saying the 45p per mile can only be paid tax free to an individual not a company?

You can actually invoice out at £1/mile if agreeable.

What you claim as an employee is generally 10K @ 45p and then subsequent at 25p/mile................as avoids "tax complications".
However, you could claim at £1/mile and be paid a £1/mile but then end up having tax calculations to complete/submit to HMRC.

I bet that was an exec airport taxi. I’ve taken a few from West Yorkshire to Heathrow :)
If it was serviced properly and on time, I'd have no problem with that kind of mileage... in fact, I'd prefer it to a lower mileage car with a poor service history.

Nothing wrong with that at all. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in a car why not take a look at something you actually want to be in (budget constraints accepted)

This will be.my problem- common sense will say get something sensible (and Mondeos are actually brilliant cars) but heart will say c350 cdi estate or coupe!

Realistically, what mpg can be achieved with a 350 cdi ? I actually do stick to 70 these days on Motorways so I'm guessing late 30's?

We have 2 Superbs plus 2 Octavia's, and they are fine cars ( especially the Superbs ) they will cruise all day long at the legal max here in Ireland, and in comfort too.

OP - the only true way is brim-to-brim to appreciate a true MPG over any meaningful fact.
Sometimes see people post great figures over shortish run with warm components which for me is meaningless.

I cover approx 25K/annum and have found MB cars to return
# C220/W204 will return low 60s
# E250/W212 will return low 50s
# E350/W212 will return mid/high 40s
reduce by approx 5MPG for winter time

If you fancy a V8/ML diesel then the ML450 will return 32MPG on a run (if you drive like a nun).
Are these figures from mainly motorway driving? In comparative terms, UK imperial Gallon equals 4,546 Ltrs,,,,,so in the case of your C220/W204, its approximate consumption in Ltrs would be 13 Miles per Ltr. Thats very good mileage.
