My W211 E320 CDI Estate manages 40+ on a run without trying. It is a heavy lump though

also not EU6, as above, I don't think you will get anything in that budget that is EU6

I was getting 28 to 35 on a journey if I was careful in my E320cdi. I haven't driven the car since I changed the torque converter. My neighbour drove it down for the MoT but didn't report any issues with slipping or harsh gear changes, well not she said. Hopefully I'll return better MPG Alex once it has a new Mot :D

You never know!! Mine is mapped to its eyeballs and has new injectors though so that may account for the difference.

It sounds like the 320cdi engine responses lovely to a remap, A chap who bought my light blue e320cdi had a remap done to his saloon 320cdi, plus a bigger intercooler and a larger turbo charger, he took me for a ride in it, very impressed plus it returned 40mpg

Does it have DPF? They seemingly were less efficient in the earlier days.
I had a 2004 C class 2.2 with one, economy was terrible.

Mine is mapped with a DPF and I get mid 40's on a run

We haven't seen over 40 in ours for a while now. It used to happen sometimes, but not recently. Mind you, apart from towing the caravan, we've hardly done any trips in it for 18 months...

After reading what some of the posters are getting in terms consumption figures... in the 40's, 50' and even in some cases higher, my personal experience has not been even remotely like these mileages...( unfortunately :alien: ) regardless of what the onboard computer claims ( 5-6 Ltra / 100 Klms) the reality at the pumps is ave 28MPG. So for the last two days, I monitored my driving , and now have what I believe as an explanation. The kind of driving I do is largely on winding and very hilly roads, and hitting 6th, never mind 7th gear is a rare event. So now that some level of freedom of travel is allowed, I'll do some mixed motorway and local driving, and see what figures that gives me. Strange, but with the previous car, Audi A6 1.9 TDI Sport, 45-50.MPG was easily achieved, and basically on the same type of driving.:)

Weather, tyres, fuel, driving style make a big difference. Suspect the way a car is tuned and maintained is also a big factor, Eg during the winter months with refineries changing the mix plus a set of winter tyres in the cold weather I see 5-8MPG decrease, can be as much 10MPG.

A real life example is my E350 with dieselgate (new NOx sensors and latest tune) saw a fall from low 50MPG to mid 40MPG with same driver, routes, wheels weather, etc. This costs me nearly £500/annum extra in fuel in this car alone. I am expecting this car to only return high 30s come the winter months.

(When you are spending over £5,000+/annum on fuel alone across vehicles - whilst not watching MPG like a hawk a basic appreciation is necessary).

Some old photos from my phone over same car/route (E350) post and pre Dieselgate. Morning rush hour travel to same site.

Do you go just by the computer figures, or have you a fleet program which measures actual consumption from fill to fill across the range?

This is the “Road Trip” app, showing fill to fill mpg for my 212 E220. No 3x spurious figures caused by my other half forgetting to give me mileage figures! F3F5D335-05DD-40D4-87DE-D2DFB2331717.png

You really should not encourage me :geek:

Every so often - I simply brim-to-brim, compare odometer against google maps or waze (for mileage travelled). Thereafter, know miles covered and cost of fuel. Most UK pumps are checked by Weights & Measures every so often and so do not generally under-dispense (minor allowance does exist.....think it is 1%)

Example:
520miles covered
£58.00 of diesel @ £1.33/litre

£58.00 diesel is approx 9.58gallons.............................(comes from £1.33 x 4.55 (there are 4.55litres to a UK gallon) thus £6.05/gallon).

520 miles divided by 9.58 gallons equates to 54MPG. Suspect the OBC (on board computer) would display high 50's

To be honest I do not get hung up over MPG (or would drive eg E220 over E350) even though cover 25K miles. By the same token cannot justify an E63 over a diesel for this type of mileage. (I would be putting approx £4,000/petrol in an E63 alone vs £2600 in an E350).

*Only recently got the Smart back so haven't collated the "other" costs as yet - whilst the fool economy looks poor for the smart it has spent most of its live on short town center commute work - it achieves mid 70's when it's used for longer runs

Fuel History of my 2014 E class 220. Just coming up to first year of ownership. Mileage was obviously influenced by covid. But now I hope to do some serious long distance driving, and see how it performs as it was designed to. Although its built for the motorway, it handles the secondary country roads that I use regularly very well and is still a pleasure to drive, enough to compensate for the poor fuel consumption figures.
These figures form part of a total file, which includes ALL costs, purchase, servicing, tyres, tax, insurance etc. And the result is given in costs per mile / klms. When used across several veh's, it can give quite a lot of info....best vehicle, driver behaviour etc.

Update on mine after an unexpected trip to Wales to buy a guitar.
Steady 70mph cruising, the best I saw was 47.8 on the computer.
Once up to temp ( ie on the way home after a 15 minute stop) driving A roads and a couple of B roads saw 45.7 on the computer.
I'm well chuffed with that!

This is bringing it home to me!!

In 12 months and just over 12,000 miles I have put just over £22 worth of electricity in my car..... gulp.....

Its gonna be a shock going back to a normal fuel powered car!

I know this is a controversial subject so I'll keep it brief.
I don't believe electric cars are the future.
IMHO hydrogen fuel cells will be the sustainable way forward.
But that's just my opinion based on gut feel.
Whatever happens MPG will become a thing of the past one day :(

There is a possibility that later this year I will change jobs.

It will be for an improved work/life balance but will come with some downsides.

One of which will be having to give back my beloved EV company car!

The new job comes with a 42p per mile fuel allowance, and this will need to recover the cost of buying it, fuel, insurance, road tax etc etc etc

My problem is, my credit score is rubbish - so I will need to buy not finance it - and will have about 5k or so to spend.

I have seen some people post some pretty outstanding MPG's on here - in the 60's + - and having got used to spending practically nothing on fuel for a year - I begrudge £70 a time to fill a car!

There are no EV's that I can get for my budget that will do the miles I'll need to do a day - so I think I need a super-economical diesel.

I'd love a V8 - but it simply won't be viable......

So who's getting this stupid economy figures - and what engine do you have - I am assuming the 2.1 litre 250CDi ? - If that 's the case, are these Euro 6 compliant - and if so from what year - and I fear these may be beyond my budget, but I just want to check....

Thanks all.

mpg is very "in the air"..... it depends massively on driving style and journey type.

I drive a tourer (the big people carrier version of a Vito)... I am 70 and a hooligan.. always trying to stay on the right side of the law but frequently too fast and always first off at lights etc.

from west coast to east coast (blackpool to grimsby) on the A road through manchester and over the penines I get around 47mpg
same journey at a boring 60mph on motorway I get around 53/54mpg
around my normal semi rural and town, I get around 38/ 42mpg

it really depends on lead foot + geography + weight of traffic............ look more realistically at the lower quoted figures.. the higher ones can be impossible to match.
