There is an Indy in Princess Risborough Bucks who I may go and see tomorrow and get there view of it.
Did you buy the car from a Mercedes approved garage ? If you did the missing service is down to them .

Sadly not. It came from an independent dealer who does not give guarantees, but as it was a low mileage I felt this would not be an issue. How wrong could I be.

Camera down the bore.....apparently
Ask for some pictures, the worry is what caused the failure and unless found, will it happen again?
An over fuelling injector will cause diesel knock, which should have been heard. It could be debri which knocked a hole in the piston, had any work done recently ?

No work done recently other than an new oil cooler. Has a phone call from Inchcape Mercedes Oxford who tell me Mercedes Benz will offer no good will and they want £13,743.00 to fit a full remanufactured engine. The lesson here is never buy a diesel Mercedes without FSH and never buy any Merc older than than six years old even with low mileage as they will not help at all. In fact the best lesson is don't buy a Merc full stop. Scrapyard here it goes.

Same bosch injectors used in many brand cars, and I doubt they would have covered repair any better. But replacement engine price is ridiculous.

I don’t agree with your assessment but I understand how you arrived at it.

I’d be looking closely at the damage, a melted piston looks completely different from impact/debri damage. Plus with debri there will damage to the cylinder head.

As Bobcat I also don't agree. None of my Mercs (and I have 3 currently and have had 8) have given any major issues at all and none have been younger than 10 years old (and two current ones are 29 and 19 years old).

I understand your frustration but your experience really isn't representative of the brand.

This seems a very odd statement and as asked above I wonder how long between you purchasing and it going pop.

Makers don't want you to keep the car for more 8vyr apparently and fsh is advised for the warranty period after which a good indy is prob best idea. I tend to judge on condition, rather than miles I used to be OK buying high miles but great body condition but the last carceng I had to overhaul was 1300 Ford eng at about £300. How things have changed.
I thinking any euro 6 on, is just a major headache on its way. Unless ur in position to change car every 3 Yr.. Which is likely the position makers are trying to push us? Its apple syndone, introduce software updates that degrade battery performance pushing owners to buy new. . Seems plenty car makers been at something similar?
No updates for me and no more new cars. I am 40 Yr into construction equipment, and at least 80% of downtime is electronic, electrical. So that's shxxe progress in my view. But I think its more about makers progress
Levers and pilot systems and proper guages not electronic rubbish, it was idiot proof downtime from such problems was minimal.

What's odd about an independent car dealer that does not give warranty. Three months was the offer and that has long passed, and like most, are not worth the paper they are written on. I have had the car a year since purchase. This car was built when Mercedes Benz were riddled with injector problems. This know doubt has the original injectors that were causing engine failures. https://www.carsuk.net/mercedes-fixes-diesel-injector-problems/

Never heard of a diesel injector causing a piston to melt.

It almost doesn't matter what warranty they give.
If they're a dealer (not a private sale) then you're covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
You can reject within the first 30 days for any fault and get a full refund. Between 30 days and 6 months the dealer is given one opportunity to fix it and if they don't or it doesn't fix it you can have a refund (not full because you will have deemed to have had usage) because it will be assumed the fault was there at time of purchase, unless the retailer can prove other wise (very difficult). If it happens after 6 months you would need to prove the fault was there at time or purchase to have any recourse.
Pay any part of the purchase with a credit card and you have additional protection if the retailer doesn't co-operate.

I have, a few times. Like I wrote earlier. Perhps in Finland we have plenty of diesels and they are driven a lot so such failures also occur and are reported more often.

If this is the case, it’ll be the first Mercedes I’ve heard of.
