ok, understood but if the PSE is covered with plastic which is taped to the boot floor then surely it cannot get wet? the issue is intermittent. had zero issues since Feb last year. wondered if its just the cold? Would be great to send the PSE down for inspection, thank you very much indeed! have your details already so will sort this. How much for your nearly new replacement please? as always Malcolm, thank you!!!

If the board is covered in the green algae, I can clean them up and remove it all. the pump will never be the same till it is cleaned up.

I will not sell mine under £350 as they cost £825 new

ok, that makes sense. I will get it wrapped up over the weekend and ship it down to you with a courier. Fingers crossed we can see a fix with a good clean then and if not then I would certainly take the PSE replacement, if that's ok with you.

That is fine by me, or use recorded next day insured post

Hi Malcolm, I am sending the PSE first thing tomorrow but just wanted to check that if I disconnect and pack it up, I will still be able to access my boot without it. When the fuse blew, I couldnt get into the boot even with Skeleton Key.
Mainly so I can regain access to boot to fit it back in after you've had a look and hopefully repaired it!

thanks :)

Right, make sure the boot load cover is down, then try opening the roof and the boot should open from the front enabling you to work on the pump with ease. Just release the switch when the boot has opened, Try it.

ah ha!! so reinstall the PSE from the other side with boot open . Will try taking it out this way then!
not tried opening yet just sussing out the what if's guessing that with PSE disconnected the Skeleton will work fine - just lose the soft close etc.
Roof will clearly still work witout PSE then!? - heading home shortly to disconnect and prepare for its journey down to you. thanks

SL350 Sports Edition 2008/3.5
Newbie joining in

Hi to everybody,

I'm new to this forum, new to Mercedes and picked my 2008 SL350 Sports Edition about a month ago. To date, I have been loving the car. I live in Lincolnshire but work on the south coast so I use it to travel up when I get time off. The car is fanastic on these long drives and I'm averaging over 30 MPG on a good run.

When I was deciding on a SL, I read loads of stuff on forums (such as this one) about the car, so I think I entered ownership understanding the potential issues and with my eyes open. When I looked over this car, I was particular to check that the boot was dry with no obvious signs of water ingress. I've even been keeping an eye the boot just to make sure during the recent wey weather.

Then it happened yesterday.......

After a long sustained period of rain over several hours, I noticed that the wings of boot separator (it was in the forward postion) were wet and so was the some of the carpet and a thimble full of water in the bottom of the boot. Luckily, some car mats in the boot aborbed most of the water and the foam around the pump does not appear to be wet/damp (i'm going to have a closer look at the weekend though).

The water is seeping in through the join in the seals between rear window and C pillers. My suspicion (hope) is that the drains just need cleaning out which is my other job this weekend when at home and I can get the car into the garage. My question is:

Would retracting the roof a little give me access to the top of the drains under the rear window? I cant seem to feel the open end of the drain with the roof up. I dont want to poke my finger about in there to much and break something.

Thanks for any advise in advance.

Ade

You need to get a piece of timber about 15" - 18" long - sit in the car & start to open to roof. When the gap is about the same as the length of timber, stop the process & hold the timber between the centre of the leading edge of the roof & the top of the windscreen. Gently & a little at a time, lower the roof until it comes to rest against the timber. You can then switch off the engine & play about as much as you need - the roof will go nowhere & you have access to all rubber seals. When you are done, start the engine & start to lower the roof again (holding the timber with the other hand!!!!!) until it can be removed.

This could be the same fault where the water goes down the edges on C pillar, to the bottom and up the other side into the boot, how good is the seal on the outer edge, is it tight all the way round

DRMW - Thanks for the advice on securing the roof.

TV - From what I can see from the outside, they seem tight to the pillers and in good nick. I will have a closer look at them (particularat the edges) at the weekend when I have the roof half opened. Certainly they look nothing like the ones in your DIY post.

The big problem on the C pillars is there are three welds, the metal overlaps and it is impossible to get any self adhesive anything that can completely seal over those joints, the water runs down edge (end) of the metal, goes down and up to the inside, so when the roof is down, you have the insides of these rubbers facing you with the boot opened from the front, that is start to lower the roof, the boot lid opens, then turn off at that point and you can work with ease

Hi Malcolm,

As Spring is wandering nearer, can I get your contact details to arrange that C pillar leak fix when it's convenient (and warmer)?

Car is currently nice and dry under a cover with some moisture absorbing blocks inside. Had to tie string around the cover to stop it flapping madly in the gales mind!

cheers,

Chaps,

Can I ask; does anyone know for certain if the PSE pump is responsible for the boot locking control. In other words is anything else responsible for the boot lock not working with the key on top of a central locking failure?
