The main idea of the pipe is to stop the boot from when closing from pulling the seals in line with the C pillar and the window away as it closes. Once all set form then by all means clip it to 1½".

This is such a great thread and fills me with lots of confidence that I've made the right choice in joining the forum and the club, and hopefully I'll be a proud owner on Tuesday :)

Hi we were in contact last year about the boot leaks! My car has been in the garare all winter so no worries about the leak! But now with the better weather its time to sort it out. Would you be able to help me with the boot fix and a couple of other small issues, I a happy to meet with you or make contact by email or phone! Thanks nick

Exactly the same with mine. Sorted it myself with the aid of the DIY thread on here and a chat with Malcolm at the Duxford gtg (thank you). Cost - £4.99 for a tube of sealant from Halfrauds.

Looks like someone had already had a go at it by putting some sealant along the top of the seal. I opted to completely remove and cleaning it to remove the old sealant. Then I put a good sized bead of sealant along the shallow groove on the metal plate (instead of the seal). This worked well with no leakage of sealant from the seal.

All looks very good and after a down-pour of rain some hours after finiishing the job everything seems dry. I'll be keeping an eye on it over the next few days before removing my rain water collection system from the boot.

Cheers

Adrian

Now done the Malcolm fix to my rear window and no water at all despite the comedy downpours Friday night.

I didn't actualy take off the metal plate - I peeled away the rubber all the way accross towards the bolts each side, and holding it away from the plate, cleaned the plate, derusted it and then put sealant on. Also cleaned the rubber with strong vinegar to remove rust stains and algae. Left the boot closed for two days and hey presto!:D

Yes I could do it, but I am a long way away, Coilin at MBS can also do a good job on this and he is in Southampton.

We've just bought an SL 350 R230 and it would seem we have a leak along the bottom of the rear screen as after medium to heavy rain or even a few hours of steady rain water is getting into the boot area. Looking at the bottom of the rear screen it would appear someone has at some time tried to fix with a coat of clear silicone which in places has detached and I am thinking of removing old silicone and applying a fresh seal, is this the best fix for the problem or is there a better solution?
Please advise.

yes its a known problem

the way that i fix these is purchase a new rubber seal from mercedes it comes with a fresh adhesive strip on it and they should supply a butyl strip cord as an extra seal.

remove the old strip x2 nuts either end ( when opening the roof stop at the point the boot lid opens and prop it up )
you will have to clean the area from rust and apply primer and paint

attach new seal its a bit tricky you'll need x2 pairs of hands

water test - job done

read these first - the solution is (normally) quite simple once you know how (and cheap):

There is no point in buying a new seal for the rear window, the design is not as good as the early ones, and using sticky tape will give a 4 years clear before it goes again. Many do my mod, but never get the C panel seal right, so the water still comes in both sides. The rubbers here must be sealed on the insides and dead easy to do with the boot open backwards.

Television/Malcolm,
Is your mod shown in the 3 links posted by drmw/David?

Yes they are. I did my 2002 car in 2007 and it is still perfect and untouched since.

I suppose it depends on how well you do the job with the new seal as I've never had one come back on me as of yet and I've done quite a few to date some maybe 7 years ago at least and never used the tubes but it is rather an interesting way of doing it for a DIY job.

Everyones got their own methods, i can vouch for my method because I'm doing it myself but it may be worth while doing the way your being advised by the others.
