Hello!

I have travelled across the internet in search for answers but cant seem to find the right one (or even a person who has the same car as me) so I wanted to check here.

I just bought a 1998 SLK 200 (R170, M111.943) with high CO emissions and high Lambda score.
I changed the MAF which took care of the CO but the lambda was still high.
My next idea to get it roadworthy is to change the lambda probe/probes.

And here comes the problem, how many sensors are there? I have physically located one just behind the engine in the engine room (on the exhaust) but I keep coming across explanations and tips to "replace them all". some say two, some say four etc, and all of the videos and pictures I find are on SLK230.

So does anyone know the correct answer for sure and if you have any tips for changing it that would be appreciated as well!

Thanks!
William

My 1999 has only one. I'd be astonished if yours has more.

Try looking on autodoc website. Input your car details and that will narrow down your search.

If there are several different ones try their online chat. Give them your Vin number and they will link you to the right part.

Go to the dealer. tell them you need sensor. ask the price and how many is needed. then tell them you will think about it.

personally i would just go dealer and order them and ask for discount.

ps have you had codes read for any faults. ideas and swapping out parts can get expensive.

Thank you Uncle Benz and Robin for good tips!
And Mioba, no I haven't found anyone with a code reader yet and thought that id try the relatively cheap quick fixes first before buying one myself :p

Does anyone actually have a SLK 200 (r170) from 98? and if so, did you need the specialised lambda socket to change the sensor?
