Has an oil and filter change on the box made any difference ? Most members will recommend the change every 40k miles .

Only differences between the various 722.6 boxes is the torque they can handle but I think that is to do with the hardware and not things like filters, seals etc.

The parts code for the box indicates the torque rating but it is hard to find.

All 722.6 boxes are not the same. There are variations in ratios, number of clutches, thickness of clutches etc.
Best to get the full code and find one the same.
The 722.6 is a gearbox family sharing a similar design but there are significant variations in the details.

Now that would have been too good to be true............:) Are the box's individually numbered, like a chassis? or is it a generic nr for each type of box?

Like engines. There is a 3 digit main code followed by a three digit sub code.
If you fit the incorrect box problems may range from poor shifting through to limp mode.

Yes that figures....like when the early DMF's started to fail, in a lot of cases, they were replaced with solid flywheels....with consequences (and not good ones either !! ) for the gearboxes themselves. Moral of the story, replace like with like.

When I needed a second hand box my indie (ex MB garage foremen) said I was lucky it was not a 270 as only a 270 could be used, mine being a 220 gave more choice.
