Hi all,

I own a Clk270cdi but looking to get a convertible. Found a clk280, 100k miles, 2007 (engine code beyond those with ballancer shaft issues). I'm worried about the gearbox 722.999. How prevalent are the issues with 722.999? I see a lot of people complaining but hoping a specialist could weigh in on how often they had to rebuild ones built in 2007 or beyond. What would a rebuild set me back these days?
Cheers,
RR

I don't think the 7G is any worse reliability wise than any other box.
It can suffer poor changes 1-2 and turbine sensor failures but then 5G boxes can suffer the same thing and we probably have more reports on them than 7G.

Hello and welcome

I’ve had 2 x 7G boxes and not had an issue with either. Change the ATF regular

Hello RR, the two responses above are from very experienced advisers. They generally know what they're talking about.

If you buy the car , check the paperwork for an ATF change at 37500 miles which should have been done by MB .
My E class has 103k on it and has had 3 ATF and filter changes and changes as it always has .
I would suggest if you drive the car and the gearbox performs well at the time then when you buy the car get an ATF and filter change done on the gearbox (including the Torque converter drained ) preferably at an MB Independent .
Update your user details to show your location and someone will recommend an MB Independent near you , maybe budget £250 ish to get the gearbox oil change done

Agree with everyone on this , with correct service there should be no real problems and at worst the TCU may need a refurb but again not the end of the world

Hi & welcome. I have had three 5G gearboxes no problems with any of them.
Also have a 7G gearbox 9 years old 60K miles no problems. Except going from 2nd to 1st when cold produces a clunk.
This is quite common but dosent get any worse.
