On the news it is reported that there is a trial in Manchester of persons involved it a traffic accident scam that has been going on for years!

Evidently, it was only discovered when the staff at an insurance company notice numerous accident's at the roundabout overlooked by their office, it would seem that it was the same driver involved every time.

It would also seem that the flat rate was £500 to involve your car in a rear end shunt which then resulted in a insurance claim and compensation for injuries received.

Well, who would have thought of that!

apparrently, when i read an article on this once, the people carrying out these scams usually have a piece of rag or similar tied to the back of their car, either on the bumper, towing eye, towbar etc. this is to warn other scammers not to follow too close. as a result, if anything hangs from the back of a car that shouldnt, im well back from it!

If this the case why do not the traffic police stop the car/s and find out who is driving?

If it is one person committing multiple offenses driving different cars how come the police have not attend after so many rear enders in one location? After all it is an offense, Driving without due care and attention? Or is there no fine to be shared with the Council?

Or have the cameras taken over? But, if that is the case, was there not a camera on this multiple accident "hot spot"?

Accidents are not legally reportable to the Police unless there are injuries sustained or damage to third party property. They are not reportable to insurance companies if the parties involved agree to sort out any damage between themselves and make no claim (though some insurance companies may tell you to inform them of any incidents anyway).

If someone does report it to the Police anyway and they decide to attend, they might then make charges if there is evidence to do so.

This has been going on for years.

The roundabout is at Wethoughton.

Always wise to carry a digital camera and take particular note of how many persons were in the other vehile as the numbers have a habit of expanding when a claim is submitted.

Why? Why has this been going on for years!

You cannot leave you car for two Minuit's on a yellow line/parking/loading bay without a "Parking Attendant" appearing from nowhere, so why if there are numerous accidents in one place, no attendence?

I have no doubt more "Money" cameras will appear near these accident "black spots" as it is obvious that speed is a contributory factor in these accidents.

The problem is that the Council can produce the figures to prove it!

This scam seems to have started in the NW + Yorkshire.

My insurance agent told me about this 6 or 7 years ago - I had a suspicious claim at work (non-motoring) and as an aside they said this area is the centre of scam accidents so with that local culture don't be surprised if you get a few claims.

Subsequently this happened to someone at work - car stops suddenly on roundabout, you run into the back and 4 or 5 people have bad back injuries or similar resulting in large insurance claims.

there have been cases in latter years of whole families being caught and jailed. I think it takes a bit of proving though.

Why has it gone on so long - well it's the same reason why drug dealers have flourished, why other difficult and serious crimes have risen, they are difficult and expensive to prove and the motorist is a much easier and far more lucrative target.
