Hi I had a check ad blu car will not start in 500 miles warning - counting down and the engine management light also - I topped up the ad blu - it didn’t need it - but now ad blu warning comes on and then clears once I go in to check it ( just select the message ) and it’s now measuring fine - no count down message anymore - but engine management light is still on - I have it booked in for diagnostics at Mercedes dealer - do you think this could just be an update required to clear the engine management warning - I have my mot booked same day later on so this will fail if they don’t clear the message or fix it if it’s a genuine issue ? Car is 2018 e220d cabriolet ( 29149 miles)

Hello and welcome,

AdBlue issues are unfortunately common on low mileage Euro 6 cars…:(

Many threads on here, please have a search

If they don't fix it, the presence of the engine management light is an MOT fail unfortunately.

Have you bought the car from Merc within the last 12 months ? May have warranty cover .

Just more aggro than its worth delete or flog it. If u can without a smack in wallet. I understand emulators that plug into diagnostic port can do this, I have not done so. But if I can't sell without a smack in wallet I will run until it comes back (500 to go) then happily delete it.

there's a few posts about the fun regarding merc software updates and cheap NOx sensors they fitted on early cars. They need to be replaced with a third gen version and 4 software updates - all of which OUGHT to all be done for free under their legal obligation to sell a car that met the emission standard "they pretended it had when it left the building"

think back to the bad press VW had getting caught with slightly interesting ways to circumnavigate the law re emission control of their diesels.... Mercedes where doing much the same but in a less sensible manner, and its been more problematic to resolve. But secretly the dealers tend to wash their hands of it and try to extract £1000 from you to do what Merc need to be paying for...

Welcome to the forumz Lets hope you stick around and share the joys of your car with us all.

EML is a failure. If you are MOT at merc then thy will happily fix the fault for you and end you how with a valid ticket for the next year.

AFAIK, adblue levels dont trigger an EML from reading here. As my cars are all pre adblue - maybe someone with a more modern lump can elaborate.

VW’s have plenty of issues post “fix” as well…

hi well were now in october the car has been in 4 times each time mercedes has 'fixed' the problem ? - then to be told i have a water leak in back light thats caused erosion of the electric/ so far injection nozzle replaced (repair kit) control unit x 2 replaced/repair kit metering/ new back light/injection nozzle/ now have come back to me and suggested it needs a new ad blu tank - £1323 - mercedes have goodwill contribution, and they have come back with a contribution of 11%. - so far i have paid £2579 ? - I have suggested a refund for pervious work as this didn't fix the issue it went in with orignally ? should i be paying out for a new ad blu tank if this was the cause of the same recurring error (usually after 30 miles) ? what do you think?

Unfortunately the adblue mercs are screwing the owners, the system has, at least before 3rd version, been a major drama for those involved. My system, incl tank was changed by previous owner about 12k miles ago, it tried to turn my motor into a brick 3 times on three trips to France over last 12 months. I gave up, did adblue egr delete.
Any car with that system will never be getting in my garage again, after I sell this one, shame, cos motor drives nice. But its been more hassle than any other I have had, it will be my last benz, r and d at owners expense is of no interest to me. Yanks don't put up with it. Why shud us brits?

what age is the car and has it ever had any body damage at the rear ?

less than 6 years old and if it has never had any damage (to cause the water ingress / leak) and you can get Merc to agree there is no accident / other body damage / replacement glass / tail lights damage - you should try and argue under the consumer rights act 2015 (+sale of goods act), that a premium brand car should not have a water leak that damages the electrics in this way - thus its Merc's issue and not yours

they can't actually dispute this (they will but you must not believe their lies), the law is on your side but you have to fight hard to get traction. Take merc or the dealership to a small claims court having carefully laid out the timeline, the costs, the failures to resolve satisfactorily, the inconvenience etc. and aim to get all your costs back - don't worry about if any of the staff or people have behaved well or listened nicely - its a game they are crooks and you have been stitched up - stand your ground and kick them where it hurts

in the last few years its become clear adblue ages and you need an anti-gout solution for the adblue tank - its was likely this all along and they misdiagnosed it all - note in last 18 months adblue gout remedy products are now readily available

a vehicle warranty is just an extra it doesn't circumnavigate better laws - its a bit like why John Lewis offer a two year guarantee on a toaster and most decent places offer 5 or 6 years on a high end TV (see bold red) - its not because they are nice - its the LAW they have to, the rest are lying and pretending otherwise and the poor fall for it

Under The Consumer Rights Act 2015 or The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (for purchases made before 1 October 2015), the law says that any goods you buy must be:

  • Of satisfactory quality;
  • Fit for any particular purpose made known to the seller; and
  • As described.
This means that the goods should meet the standard any reasonable person would expect, taking into account the description of the goods, the price paid, and how they were made. Deciding whether something is satisfactory quality will include the state and condition such as their appearance, quality of finish, how much was paid for the item, freedom from minor defects, safety and durability.

you have six years from when you bought the faulty goods to take a claim to the small claims court and reclaim the cost of repair of the product

Many places, about 150£. But it is worth finding out what causd it first, might be simple?
