It was 13.8 when we tested it last week, so maybe it's just the software update required. Will book it in anyway next week.

That is all it can be,,, we had quite a few members that have had this update, 13.8 is perfect

Just to close my part of this thread, it was indeed the reg pack. I now have a UB reading of 12.2 at switch on and 14.2 with the engine running. Interestingly I did manage to start the car several times and drive short local trips in London with starting UB of 11.5, dropping to 10.9 on my last trip to the garage. Thanks again for the advice

Reg packs only cost about £20 but not suitable for all alternators

halfords battery

You never know with batteries,,,many fail at 3 months and others 10 years.

The main thing is get a good make like Exide,Lucas,Varta, Bosch or banner,

House name batteries such as Halfords are a pain in the back side

The average life is 5 years

i have just purchased e class 2005 220 cdi. every now and then red battery warning shows, on purchase of car had new alternator and new battery. i have change auxiliary battery.
when running volt reading 13.8 volt on both batteries.
only thing is the main battery is a halfords could this be my problem.

This posses a hard question, these car were made to run on AGM batteries for 2005 I believe, the charging characteristics are very different for a AGM battery and a lead acid. It tells you in the handbook the type of battery that should be fitted.

I thought agm batteries are for stop start type cars more heavy duty Use.
is there anything you suggest do try next to clear error.

Your car should have an AGM battery, its possible that the battery inverter does not like the lead acid one as the charging is not the same, you will have to put the car on STAR to see what is wrong, if anything.

The car should go onto STAR the diagnostic kit for Mercedes, any indie has one, and this would indicate the fault message. I would do that before replacing the battery.

merc found garage i purchased car from fitted wrong alternator. no red light anymore. glad still under warranty. thank you for your help.

Can somebody help
My 320 was off the road for a couple of months. I took it out every two weeks. Had to jump start
Now it won't start, charged the battery and it turns over very healthy, got the red battery warning and "display fault"
Couldn't find the battery so put the charger straight onto the car overnight
Next option is get it towed to merc garage?

same issue with visit workshop light....

initially changed the alternator and the issue stopped. 3 weeks later same light issue... this time the battery 11.9v and the alternator 9.9v. Have the alternator replaced and battery was charged by mechanic ... car started however, the red visit workshop light was still there.. mechanic says the red light is still on and the battery isn't being charged.... anyone experience this before. He believes it's the fusable link or something... anyone know where to find this on a CLK 500 or it even exist on this model? or any advice on what to check for?

This should be just a pre fuse failed. Only the one battery on the 208/209
