An update for anyone who wants to know....
The cause of my limp mode and engine management light was a dodgy exhaust pressure sensor.
All fixed now thanks to my local Merc specialists.
Glad it wasn't something more serious.
Thanks to this forum for all the knowledgeable people calming my gearbox fears!

Common fault , cheapish fix . I'm beginning to think cleaning it maybe part of my maintenance regime in the future. Glad you got sorted .

Hi Jenny - I've recently had the same thing. Weird limp mode type gear changes, no kick down etc - and a engine management light.
Just out of interest - and you dont have to say - how much did this cost you to be rectified? Going to ask my local garage to quote and dont want them to rip me off.

I think the engine and gearbox are fine but it does feel like what ever is controlling them has the fault

Part itself is around £70 , copies are on eBay from £20 . Fitting is pretty easy DIY , but garage , should be an hour's labour.

Hi! I think it was roughly £156 or so, parts and labour.
