When I learnt to drive you were taught if you were going straight across a roundabout (which was essentially a crossroads), you were told to adopt the right hand lane and hug the roundabout.
In France if you adopt the left hand lane (bear in mind you will still be hugging the roundabout) drivers get very irate if you drive straight across.
In the UK I tend to adopt the left hand lane where there is a two lane space going around the roundabout. My offspring always moan about it.

Here, I NEVER EVER EVER go round a roundabout in parallel with another vehicle - they do not signal, nor do they follow the logical lane sequence. Most commonly, they go all the way round on the inside lane and depart at any point - again, no indicators used whatsover. Lane changes rely 100% on telepathy.!!
