When I learnt to drive you were taught if you were going straight across a roundabout (which was essentially a crossroads), you were told to adopt the right hand lane and hug the roundabout.

In France if you adopt the left hand lane (bear in mind you will still be hugging the roundabout) drivers get very irate if you drive straight across.

In the UK I tend to adopt the left hand lane where there is a two lane space going around the roundabout. My offspring always moan about it.

What about you Sir?

Here, I NEVER EVER EVER go round a roundabout in parallel with another vehicle - they do not signal, nor do they follow the logical lane sequence. Most commonly, they go all the way round on the inside lane and depart at any point - again, no indicators used whatsover. Lane changes rely 100% on telepathy.!!

I actually can't believe that I originally started this thread almost 7 years ago and it has got dragged up somehow !

And yes, my original moan is still pretty much in evidence :)

I cannot tell a lie Father, it was I.

During a tag 'clearout', I happened across this aged topic. For my sins, I felt it still had some mileage so, being Easter and in the spirit of the celebrations, I ressurected it.

The driver who decided to stop on a slip road which merges into a dual carriageway because the lights on the adjacent roundabout turned red!

A loud horn and the hard shoulder came in very handy.

1 People who are too lazy to read all the other posts to see if this has been said already.
2 Yup rear fog lamps are right up there, wonder how many motorway pile ups are caused by that one.
3. People that indicate left and then drive past 16 left turns before turning into their driveway.
4. Twa*s that pull in about 3 inches infront of you after overtaking and then proceed to create the stonechips you have carefully avoided for years.
5. Now this appears to be a female thing (not bad driving you understand, just irritating) but if you are waiting at a (narrow) side street to turn right onto the main road and someone approaches from the left who wants to turn into your side street you can bet a bloke will slow down and let you out first (makes sense, more room for him), ladies nearly always will pretend you are not there and attempt to squeeze past, almost removing your o/s/f wing in the process. hey ho.
6. Cars in front who scoosh their washers, and it goes over the top onto yours on a lovely perfect day when you've just spent all saturday polishing the bl**dy thing.....
7. People that slow down on the acceleration lane when joining a motorway (its not a bl**dy give way junction).8. Yes the bloke that seeks out your carefully parked (away from everyone) car and then parks 1 foot away so he can put a lovely ding in yours.
9. People that decide to browse the contents of the petrol kiosk when there are 25 people waiting for petrol outside.......also the bloke that decides to do his home accounts at the cash machine......or the person in front of you in the queue who insits in filing his receipt under p for petrol in his wallet before clearing off.
Ok thats enuff for now.........feel better.
Oh yes. the people that honk and point when you are (legally) driving up the bus lane....why not read the bl**dy signs.
And,
People that buy cheap rusty 210's down the local auctions and then expect the dealers and MB to get them all nicely fixed up foc, well not any more my friends.. they just spoil it for the genuine punters.

Yes it is

May I add the wonderful experience of you noticing traffic police with a gun ahead so hugging the speed limit, then a woman comes up behind you and gets very irate that you won't speed up...30 seconds later moves into the RHL, blasts past and gets pulled over for speeding?

True story :)

I too have been guilty of causing someone to get a ticket and it serves them right for not paying attention ! Mine was a set of traffic lights on a dual carriageway and i could clearly see the back half (and red stripe) of the police car at 90 degrees to my left with a transit van in his outer lane ready to turn right. The hot hatch with the loud music, big alloys and loud exhaust obviously could not as he pulled alongside the SL500. I turned my head to look at him, blipped the throttle and smiled - he took the bait and lights turned to green i gave it 3/4 throttle to give him a chance and backed straight off at 30 to watch him in disappear into the distance followed shortly after by the police car with blues alight ! Then glided past him a few hundred yards up the road whilst he got a dressing down .... its those things that make driving worthwhile :)

I was driving in an easterly direction on the A30 proceeding towards Hook. There is a long straight with a railway bridge at the end, which is also the start of the 30 mph limit for Hook.

I had been hounded all the way along the straight by an Audi A4 but because of oncoming traffic he had been able to pass. I noticed the high visibility vest lurking in trees beyond the bridge, so as I approached it I slowed down and pulled in to the nearside to enable the more important motorist to pass.

Ole. He thundered past, accelerating briskly, and I do believe raising a finger (in the style of Barry Sheen) to indicate that he was now first.

As the policeman pulled him in I trundled past and gave the customary toot that we veteran motorists tend to share with esteemed colleagues.

(old age and cunning will always beat youth and enthusiasm - Anon).

when im in my w124 estate..
i dislike drivers who come up behind me on exiting a bend onto a dual carriageway or any area where an increase in speed is likely and immediately move out to overtake me assuming because its an old car i will be holding them up
I rarely find it necessary to use kickdown and i certainly will not be rushed by these rascals but when i accelerate they are often left in the outside lane with nothing to overtake...which is nice:cool:

Do you remember those "my other car is a motorbike" stickers - I'd have a "my other car is a 63, f*** you" in the rear window.

haha!

i think i tend to go quite slowly around bends out of respect for the old girl so probably tend to "back up" other cars ( but not as severe as a F1 rolling restart:shock:)
but yes

there a few slogans w124 "wafters" could use

could be a interesting thread...
