Hi,

I have a e320 v6 (2006) , there are two air boxes/filters, if I'm looking at the engine and follow the pipes back to the front of the car the;

1. The pipe from the left air filter connects to plastic housing to the left of the rad, which let's air in as expected.

2. The pipe running from the right air filter connects to plastic housing to the right of the rad, but has a plastic blanking plate on it instead! no air can enter the system from this side...

I've pulled the blanking plate off and it looks to be a standard Mercedes part. I've clipped it back on for now.

Does anyone have the same model/ year and have the same situation? Can't work out what the blanking plate would be for as surely it makes one air filter pointless?

Thanks

It could have a trim/plastic from a different engined model.

Thanks Star I was thinking something similar, who knows what someone may have swapped out on this over 14 years I'll try and remove it again and see how it runs. How very odd though!

Hi Wighty

Yes an air filter in each box, when I got the car I replaced the filters the following week, I changed the one on the left first and it was like a wildlife park (absolutely filthy), then when I got to the one on the right surprisingly it was almost like new apart from some light discolouration. This led me down the route of checking the piping and finding the strange cap on the right hand side air intake.

I've removed the cap and started the car, it was a little lumpy at about 1.5k revs, but it flattened out after a few mins and seems to have adjusted itself to the new airflow. Took it for a little drive over the mountain here and it seems to be much more responsive.

Im trying to search online now for original replacement parts in order to see if the cap should be there in the first place, or if someone has installed the incorrect part over the years. I can't understand how someone could cap off an intake if it wasn't meant to be capped off

Maybe it saved fuel by cutting the car to half power  :D:D:D

They most probably didn’t notice the blanking cap when someone fitted a new trim.

Thanks Star, it's nice to have the car using both lungs now :D The next time I go to the shops will be when it gets a proper run. I'll get the correct trim when I find it as it has a small guard to stop larger objects going straight up the pipe

Stay safe out there :)

Hello OP, I just stumbled upon this thread while searching for the exact same problem I have just noticed on my E55!!! Did you ever figure out a solution / alternate part number to open up the driver side of the air intake? What a strange predicament...

thanks in advance

Best bet is to go to a dealer and someone parts who will pull up and IPL. Somer models of a series have a blanking plate based on the engine for the specific model. For eg I have a the blanking on my W220 which has a straight 6 diesel, but it it was a V12 id guess there would be 2 air filters and an inlet across the part.
Simply some parts are used across all models even where the entire part may not be fully needed for the application
