Out of curiosity, I sent off a sample of my engine oil to millers oils. I was curious to find out if my oil changes every 8k has made any difference to the wear inside the engine.
I have been changing the oil every 8k since ownership back in Sept 2016 when the car was on 68k. The current mileage is now190k.
This is the report that was produced:

The oil sample was taken after 7k and it was MB oil bought from MB Newcastle via ebay. I have used this oil most of the time with the odd exception being Castrol & Petronas.
I have also been using archoil fuel system additive AR6900D on and off, but in every fill up over the last 10k.

As I decided to keep this car going for as long as possible (work permitting!) I wanted to check on the engine internals to avoid /predict any possible major issues moving forward.

The most notable finding I can see was the oil soot level approaching the caution limit after only 7k. I wonder what this would be had I stuck to the 16k recommended intervals and what difference this would have made to the above readings, if any?

Manufacturer service intervals are there for reason only, to provide idiots with the illusion of cheaper service costs. That’s why I never touch a car with such extended service intervals, it’s a shag knacker.

Well done to you for changing the oil out more frequently. Old school, 5k oil changes cannot be argued against.

Good mate , it's been a long time , hope you are well ?

I'm hardly on car forums much these days as my Internet attention is drawn in a different direction and Mercedes forums can be a bit different to others !!

See you have the same OM651 2.1 C Class , excellent choice , 2 L 60 mpg economy with 3L torque with no lag because of being bi turbo .

On a realistic dyno these 250's don't make their stock figures !

But as you know I would of found some interesting things out .

Dad's just got his first BM and auto , an F11 , good spec being an M Sport Plus with additional panoramic , HUD and heated steering wheel .

I remember watching a video of two Honda F1 engineers discussing oil change intervals their view was that minimum engine wear is achieved by changing the oil every 3k miles the surprise to me was that they said the oil filter change can be extended to 6k miles as it made little difference.

New one to me that.
It's just automatic to change the filter while the oil is draining.

1% limit of soot? That sounds a rather arbitrary number, and low at that.
I'm not aware of any ACEA/API limit of soot. There are tests that load up an oil with soot (much more than 1%) to check that viscosity is not adversely affected.
If an oil can only take 1% of soot before it is adversely affected, that's a reflection of the oil quality.

Probably not enough dispersants in the oil with their lovely little polar heads and hydrocarbon tails .

I've started using Tunap engine detergent, its absolutely brilliant
HI Steve, would there be any benefit using Tunap as I change oil every 8k?
Also Millers suggested I change oil from 5W30 to 5W40 due to the "extra protection" this may offer. Have you any experience of this?

I believe, if u use the std reccomended oil and dump it every 5k ur motor will likely run forever. I use the old oul60/40 with white spirit on my external wood. Never needed to replace any wood.

Curious though , do these oil tests look at current viscosity ? of supplied samples and report how far they are out of grade.

Yes 50/50 used diesel oil and creosote substitute makes for dark black fence panels with the colour lasting years

Why would you not change an oil filter every 5k with an oil change? To me that’s just contaminating the new oil immediately.

Not really that's how I do it. Worked for me for 40 yr. As I have said before it's the cheapest, simplest maintainance one can do.

Oil filters fine at 10k interval , it has to be removed to refill oil anyway so it’s inspected. Half the new oil goes down the filler cap and the other half down the oil filter housing. Let it sit for about 15mins before firing up.
I use 5w40 recommended by Jeep for heavy use such as towing, the Mercedes 5w30 does not cut it in hard use
