Hi, I have a 1984 W123 230e. I'm only getting a few hundred miles on a new fanbelt before it starts to fray and squeal. Three different mechanics have checked it and don't know why it's doing it. The last guy suggested it might be the modern universal belts that they are using and suggested sourcing a genuine part. Does anyone know the code for them or where I can get one?

Hello and welcome

I’d be checking that all the pulleys are correctly aligned, that it’s not too tight and that all the pulleys are spinning freely with no noises or tight bearings

The belts needs taking off and ALL the pulleys checked and the tensioner.
do use MB genuine parts and know the torque for the pulley nuts.
On the plastic ribbed pulley make sure its perfect. A tiny bit of damage will soon kill a belt.

What garage(s) are you using. These things should be checked when doing the belt.

In the olden days - going back a few years Id always change the water pump when doing a belt as a precaution. ie when the belts off everything should be checked/changed accordingly..
