Fitting Comand to a 2007 year E320 W211

Good evening

Forgive me if this covered elsewhere - I have looked for a while without success, hence my questions are these:

If I had a 2007 built E320 fitted with an Audio 20 radio, CD multichanger and 'Telephony Convenience' (pre- wired phone - I think that means) is it feasible to fit an NG 1 Comand unit on the basis that I think that was the correct version for that year and in so doing would be able to get full functionality.

If the Radio unit is pulled out, would I find the connectors for the NG 1 in situ behind it (or attached to it)? If they are and it gets connected up is there anything else that needs to be done i.e programming it to the car or other wizardy that only a main dealer or indie can do?

In other words, is/are other wiring /connectors required or were the looms fitted as standard whether the car was build with just a radio or with Comand. Consequently, if I were to source a second hand NG 1 head unit what would I need to ensure was included with the head unit.

Many thanks in anticipation.

I did this on a c class 2007 once. Have to get it coded on star so that the cluster display works. Literally 15 min job at an indie. In terms of fitting didn't do it myself so hopefully someone else will address for you. It wasn't a big job at all. Took the guy 30 mins.

Thank you Thinkpad. At least it would seem to be a feasible proposition. However, I would really appreciate hearng from anyone who has actually fitted one themselves and experienced the process.

Equally, I need to know what it is that I need to acquire. Is it a head unit only or would I also need a DVD player unit and some additional wiring?

Thanks again

NTG1 would be more complicated to install in your car as you need the Comand NTG1 headunit, Audio Gateway and Navigation processor which need to be installed in the boot. You would then need to then run the looms for these from the front to the back of the car.

As you have Audio 20 CD the far simpler install is to replace it for Comand NTG2.5 which was fitted to MY09 W211. It has no seperate components so all the wiring needed is currently behind your Audio 20. You will just need the unit, gps antenna, and the install kit below. Coding will be needed to activate navigation on the cluster.

http://www.commandonline.co.uk/W211-Audio20-NTG2.5-converter.html

You can sell your old Audio 20 and cd changer as it wont work with Comand NTG2.5 to recoup some of the cost.

Comand.co.uk in Lightwater, Surrey can do the install and coding.

Good Evening gents

I haven't been ignoring you. I dashed out my question first thing this morning and then immediately left the house, only returning this evening. Thank you so much for your comprehensive and clear replies. They cover all the questions that I had and they have also clarified which version to install (and why).

I will not be collecting the car until next week and on the basis that 'many a slip betwixt lip and ....." I'll hang fire on clicking the 'Buy It Now Button' with the man from Latvia until after then .

I am genuinely impressed and grateful. Thank you

There are a few UK sellers too but the guy from Latvia is good. Just search ebay for Comand NTG2.5. You need the unit for a W211 or W219, part number starts A211. They come in two models, with single dvd or built in 6 disc dvd changer.

COMAND installed

Steve..
You actually have a major advantage over me..
Believe it or not it is a far harder (and more expensive) job to install the NTG2.5 in a car which has the earlier NTG1 fitted..
You don't have the SatNav and so the wiring is all in the front behind the head unit..

In my case they had to dismantle the car interior to run the (very expensive) wiring loom cable from the boot where in my case the audio gateway was, to
the front behind the head unit..
Its a Mod that is well worth doing..
Don't forget the NTG2.5 has a hard drive built in with all the navigation data on and so its a standalone unit..
It also has built in Bluetooth and has paired faultlessly with my old iPhone4 and my current Samsung Note II.
Lastly you can store music mp3's on the hard drive as well..
The navigation of the music is very good if you do that..
There is a maximum of 4GB for music which isn't massive but its still enough for around 300 tracks of the highest quality (320kbps) MP3 tracks..
Don't forget you have a SD card slot as well.. With the latest firmware it will apparently support 32GB !!
Lastly I recently discovered that it supports "Jukebox DVD's..
In other words you can burn MP3 tracks to a DVD in folders and it sees them all....

When I bought mine for the c class had a mobile guy called nav doctor install it. Was a lot cheaper than comand online and he knew what he was doing. Including the coding. Worth looking him up.

I know Nav doctor, he is good.

Did you supply the NTG 2.5? What did he charge? Im interested to see how competitive Mitesh is.

I am about to buy a 2007 E320 cdi avantgarde with sat nav. How will I be able to tell which unit it has? The salesman doesn't think it has Bluetooth, I am going to see it tomorrow what do I look for? The data card says it has a 527 comand APS

I must have Bluetooth installed if its not there

A 2007 car would have the older Comand NTG1.

150. That includes any connection etc he had to do. I supplied the unit myself. He did the rest. Don't think from memory he had to actually fit any other wires. Note this was a 2007 c class. So one with the flip up screen. I did call you guys at the time. But you told me you won't fit anybody else's units as a lot of these Latvia ones from eBay are stolen. And I think you guys quoted me over a grand supply and fit. I managed to do the whole job for 600. Hope that helps!

So does ngt 1 have Bluetooth

Can I add it if not - or do I need to upgrade to 2.5?
