Hi My 2013 SL 350 has 34k on-the clock, I know the gearbox will need a service at 40k but that could take me probably two years to get to that milage. So is there a time limit for the box. My previous car was a Jaguar which was 60k or eight years which ever came first.

"Our temporary situation is not our final destination" Reminded me of another quote, J.
Seen on a headstone in a graveyard:-

" Man, as you are, so once was I.
As I am, so you will be, so prepare yourself to follow me"
The passerby thought for a moment, then taking out a marker he wrote the following:-
" To follow you, I'd be content, if I only knew which way you went...."
Now there's food for thought...

5 years I believe
Its one thing that continues to amaze me on this thread,,,,,is the small annual mileage on some of the cars posted here like the one in question, 7 year's old but with only 34'000 Miles on the clock.....practically still being run in. !!!

We are both retired before lockdown I did 6K miles in my car. My wife did 3K miles in her car, & I did 4K miles on my motorbike.
Since lockdown the mileage has dropped, only 3k miles on my motorbike this year no Euro trip.

Covid has completely changed all of our driving habits, and even before Covid, in more normal times and pre retirement, what kind of mileage would you have done annually? But I meant the comment in more general term's...here in Ireland, we tend to keep cars longer and to put up more miles before changing. Sure if you look at the car sales ad's, you will see some low mileage cars for sale, but a look at English car sales ad's, and the low milers will be in a bigger %.

I'm presuming that it has an automatic transmission? or is it a manual?

The days of supposedly "Lifelong" oils / fluids has long gone. MB Auto Transmissions were originally " For Life", but then when the actual oil ( and transmission ) begged to differ, sometimes catastrophically, we were then told that they never said how long that life was.... So yes, trans oil's and Rear Axle oils are routinely changed as per manufacturers instruction's. The schedule changes from car to car though.

BMW motorcycles went down the same route, final drives sealed for life. Ended with lots of failures & a change the oil policy. We had a BMW police bikes final drive catch fire during this period.

Had mine changed as part of a recall and as part of a big service in August on my R1200GSA

About 2006 I was a civilian but still authored advanced bike. I was asked if I & several other could take some of the marked BMW R1200RT's to Piddock Derby to get the final drive oil changed. I believe this was the first recall. There was no drain hole on these, the oil had to be sucked out.

The R1100S is one of the few BMW's I haven't ridden, even managed a ride on a demo S1000RR

I chopped my 996SP in for it as I wanted something else with “character” (built in issues...) for touring Europe. Kind of wish I still had it as it was a great bike for touring on with panniers and city lids

Not ridden a 996 a bit too radical for me. I have ridden a 916 & a 748 but again too radical for long distance touring, I will stick with the FJR.

Its 200 quid at an indy , get it done and forget about it for a good few years
Booked in next week at local Indy £180.00 all in. Apparently it's four years then every 74k after that for my particular vehicle that has stop start. No doubt I will have it done again before 74k as that will probably take me 14 years to notch up.:)
