Any 55 has twin pipes to each side, apart from the 203 and 209, i will take a photo tomorow of the AMG we have in and also next week when we see the Bitch, Helens is a true 55 AMG!!

The CL 500 and CL55 AMG non kompressor both have two single exhaust pipes.
Only the Kompressor CL55AMG has two twin pipes.

If the car is a W reg, it cannot be a Kompressor, but that isn't the point.
To all intents, the car is a CL500 and has been misadvertised and sold as a CL55AMG.

Another thing here is that the guy will be paying the insurance for a AMG when it is not one,,that engine size difference could also come into play later in life

like this one on PistonHeads?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/largepic.asp?i=762830&noPics=9&imgsrv=1&current=6&make=MERCEDES&model=^CL[:digit:]*

Yeah thats right i had a feeling the early ones had only a single pipe each side and when they put a kompressor on they put two each side.

I have looked on pistonheads and they have a few with only a single pipe each side

It appears you have plenty of problems with this car. Its certainly possible that a previous owner has made the cosmetic changes to make the car a copy 55, right down to the AMG engine cover. I wonder if the dealer was aware.
But that begs the question, how did the V5 state the car is an AMG?

So putting aside the exhaust and body kit aspect, how does the OP determine whether his engine is a 500 or 55?

If the VIN has been switched from another car then identifying the car's spec from that alone could be misleading.

The engine size difference is one thing to get checked,,the engine number is another as you have the number from the factory,,, this is the hard bit if the logbook has been incorrectly filled in DVLA are very helpful in these things and you should go online and tell them

It dont matter how many outlets they have, that engine in the photo is only a 500!

Its the same as Malc has in his SL500!!!

By the serial number,,he has the original number on the order and the engine in the car has a number,,they must match very important

Out of interest myself and hopefully useful for the OP too, where is the engine number stamped on the engine block?

So those are taken off the V5 right?

Can you match the VIN and Eng No from the car itself?

On the block just above the sump,,could be either side, usually the inlet side
