Hi all,
It's been a while since I was last on here , but I got a lot of help from everyone a couple of years ago and I'm hoping someone will be able to help again this time.
I have a 2002 C180 auto (W202) which about a month ago started making a clicking sound which speeds up on accelaration and slows down and stops on decelaration and idle. The noise could be heard when steering Right initially , but then progreesed to when steering straight, and seems to disappear when steering left.
It can be heard coming from under the gearstick area inside the car, but a mecahnic friend who looked at the car cannot find the cause. He has told us to leave it untill it gets worse???? so that it may become apparent where the problem is. The car is driving fine, apart from a judder at about 50 mph when breaking, bit we think that is due to the discs.
It is now, louder than before, but we still have no idea what it is.
It sounds to me like something is spinning round and clicking,( like a ring) . Could it be the gearbox.?
We had it totally rebuilt 2 years ago due to water getting into the transmission fluid.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also not sure if I have posted this in the right forum.
Thanks
Maria:D

Hi again,
My husband and the mechanic are trying to find the cable and the clip. Iis it under the car or under a panel that they need to remove to view the parts?
Any idea which part it is, i have already checked out detali.ru and we are wondering if it is part 320?
thanks again.
Maria

the clip is above the propshaft in the transmission tunnel, you will have to remove a heatshield to see it (easily done).

to test for this problem apply a little parking brake while moving at low speed and see if the noise changes. it took us a while to trace the first one we saw but that was some time ago now!

and yes, the w202 bit threw me at first too.

as for replacing the part, i do not know if mb have modified the clip but we tend to use metal pipe clips with rubber inserts and suitabe nut for a more secure repair.

Thanks for your reply, i'll tell them , so that they can have a look , hopefully this week.
They checked the brackets that attach to the rear wheels and they seemed ok,. but couldn't see the front cable , as you said they probably needed to remove the heat shield.
Do you happen to know the part number as we will have to order one I think.
Out of interest when they put the car on to a rolling ramp they could not hear the noise under the car , it is only heard inside the car, Was this the same with yours?
thanks again
Maria

Have just spoken to hubby , who said that he had already tried applying the foot brake at low speed, but it did not seem to make any difference.
Also they removed the heatsheild last night , but could not see anything, can you give me a bit more detail as to where they need to be looking. hopefully they were not looking hard enough and this is the problem and not something more costly.
thanks

Hi All,
Just wanted to update on the above problem, Last night my hubby finally got my car to his friend the mechanic and thanks to your advice they managed to find the clip and fix it. I'm so happy today as it has finally gone , no more noise, and if it wasn't for the fantatastic advice here it probably would have cost us alot more money to sort out.
So I would like to say a VERY BIG THANK YOU, to all of you who gave advice, xxxx
