Hi there, Paddy, new member! So every few years the lads do a Gumball style run to the Nurburgring with £750 to buy a car and make it there and back. This year we’ve bought a 2000 Clk320 which I’m quite chuffed with, it seems decent! (Fingers crossed)

Few issues though. I seem to have the issue with the pedal sensor where it’s going into limp mode when I floor it, the auto transmission goes a bit mad too, delaying the change or not changing. Seems okay if I drive with only upto 50% pressure on the pedal?

I think I need wheel bearing or brakes, it seems to vibrate at 80 plus? And more so when I brake at that speed?

I’m loving it other than this but really need to get these bits sorted before our trip in August.

I’m wondering if anyone local to me might be in a position to plug in and read for codes? Beers provided! :)
I’m near to Heaton Moor, Stockport.

Thanks!

Hi.

Wise choice of car and it looks pretty good too for <£750. Had the same problem with our 2001, 320. It turned out that the battery was on its way out.
New battery and all good once more.

Good luck with the gumball, sounds like a good few days.

Hi, thanks. Yes, it’s a brilliant laugh. The Prelude did us proud last time so the Merc has a lot to live up to!

Oh really a battery..? I’d never have thought of that. I presumed I’d have to have codes read or something to diagnose?

Paddy is my real name?! lol.

You’re the second person to mention a battery now, I would love it to be that simple!

Interestingly it seems to be worse after heavy breaking (which judders) so I wonder if something break related is causing it to cut power? I will definitely try a battery and I’m in the process of trying to have any codes read, I’ve no warning lights at all.

I’ll keep eveyone posted when I’ve thought of a theme to sticker the car up with!

So, i need some help. I’ve discovered the OBD port on my 2000 CLK 320 is in the engine bay?! It’s NOT under the steering column like most peoples, there’s just a blanking plate. The 38 pin round port is near the air con unit...

I’ve bought a scanner (launch c reader 319) and a 38 to 16 pin cable. Plugged in, with ignition on and it’s showing 8 faults. And that’s as far as I can get. When I try to read them or display what they might be I get an error.. something to do with ignition. Is this normal..? The cars not running right but my local merc specialist can’t fit me in for 3 weeks, I just want to know what the codes are

Are you reading codes with ignition on?

You'll only get a subset of codes with that combination.
To get all codes you need a reader capable of natively supporting the 38 pin connector.
These days that's pretty much Star or CarSoft - both laptop based solutions.

With the 38 pin cars each pin corresponds to a particular module. Pin 4 is the engine ECU for example.
Readers capable of reading the car properly have a multiplexor which switches the laptop to each pin as required. Generic readers using OBD2 rely on the car switching the correct module.

Ok update! All issues were sorted with new plugs and MAF. Cars been to Europe and lapped the Nurburgring with no issues at all. It’s been absolutely brilliant, totally reliable and quick with it. Everyone’s very impressed.
