If they wont fix it under warranty then it is £35 + 30 mins labour to get (any) garage to fit it for you. Its not like its a £1000 issue that must be done under warranty, just have it done yourself. worsted case scenario is that it doesn't make any difference (which everyone on this forum including me thinks it will), then you haven't exactly lost much.

Not that curious. Mercedes told me it was fine, so what am I supposed to do? For someone who doesn't know as much as you do about these things it's not as easy as you might think.

That said, I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think this community could help - and it has.

I got what I needed from the forum, which was a solid second opinion telling me I wasn't crazy, but I didn't get anything that I could present to Mercedes - it's still me saying "I think it's broken" and them saying "no it's fine". Also, me saying "I've heard from a guy whose car doesn't do this" doesn't cut much ice with the service department.

So, based on the responses here I thought I'd leave it until the colder months when it'll become more obvious, which is has, and now I'm waiting for a call back from Mercedes. I'll let you know what happens.

(I can't replace the thermostat myself, so it's not really 'just a few quid' to replace something that might not be broken. I'm happy (within reason!) to spend money on maintenance, but on this occasion if it's faulty, it'll be a repair under warranty.)

Warranty on a w203?
waiting for a call from Mercedes?

read the past posts - 0.5 hrs labour and part is £40 - 25% from dealer (£30) if you go in a request it cheaper and coolant

so it will cost you £105 (coolant, thermostat and labour) from dealer
or £65 from independant

Warranty on a W203 because I bought it from a Mercedes dealer. I think I said in the first post that I'd recently bought it.

Waiting on a call from the same dealer, because everyone in the service department was busy when I called earlier.

Thank you everyone for your help. I'm getting it done, that's what the call was about - it was to get it booked in.

If you're interested in knowing what difference it makes, let me know and I'll follow up here.

Thanks again - you've been very helpful.

Please do let us know. Having the resolution to the problem also makes the thread a lot more useful to someone else searching for help at some point in the future.

Had same issue on recently purchased 2006 c220 CDI sport edition.

Changed thermostat. Gauge now sits at 90 as it should with no fluctuations.
Better MPG aswell. If car dosnt get to temp, vehicle will overfuel to keep trying to get it to correct temp.

I was quoted ~£240 from the main dealer and 120 from my indie (w203, 2004) - was that too much????

Thermostats cost between approx £35 and £45.
Labour 1/2hr @ £50 p/h
Plus vat that gets us to between £72 and £84 in total, assuming no other work or parts involved.
If also changing coolant at the same time, add on £18 for antifreeze and 1/4 hr labour, which will get you near to the £120.

I changed the thermostat on my W203 220 CDI a few months back. I used a Eurocarparts one which was about £35 with a discount code. It fitted fine but was clearly not the equivalent quality to the OE item that I took off. The casting was rougher and there was no hole to attach a belt cover screw in to at the front. The OE ones come with the temp sensor included I think, I had to swap the temp sensor over and then found it would not easily fit due to rough casting. It cleaned up ok and appears to work fine.
It also took me about 1.5hr including a coolant fluid change, not particularly tricky to do though.

My S203 C220 CDI has been running very cold for ages. I finally go around to having the stat replaced last week. Hardly any difference, I can drive for 10 miles or so and, if I'm lucky, the gauge might reach 60. Eventually it will get up to around 80, but I am concerned that once the really cold weather kicks in it will be just above the minimum. Is there any other component that could be respomsible for this? Should I place a piece of cardboard over the rad?

Did the stat come with a new temp sensor?

My car can take 20 miles or so to get up to 90 degrees; depends upon the journey - at crawling speeds it takes a lomg time to heat up.

The sensors are removable, some stats come with new ones, some dont and you would swap your old one over.. which might not be working. It should be a solid 95c within 10 miles if that stat is working properly

This applies to all cars, both diesel and petrol, if the engine is running much below 80c the heater will never feel warm in the winter, 85 to 90 is fine

Good Morning Malcolm
I have now changed my Thermostat on my 2002 W210 E320CDI Estate, bought from ECP, job fairly easy to do, unfortunately did not come with a Sensor unlike if you buy from Mercedes Main Dealer, The temperature has improved, as before it was at 70-75c it is now at 80c, This was after a drive to Portland on Monday Morning, although it is warm in the car I am wondering if I should change the Sensor to improve the Temperature up to the Stats operating Temp of 92c, any suggestions welcome please.
Many thanks

Thanks Malcolm for your reply, I will wait to see if any Members with a similar Mercedes can help, I have contacted ECP today where I bought the Thermostat their part number is 209220280 and Mercedes part number is 6132000115 but ECP do not supply Coolant Sensors, so again I hope some Member can advise a Sensor to fit this new Thermostat, or maybe it is a universal fitting for the 2002 W210 e320cdi Estate.
Hoping someone knows an answer to this.
Best regards

Hi I have bought an OEM Coolant Sensor for my W210 e320cdi from GSF Car Parts at a surprisingly good price.
Just hope it is not too difficult a job to fit it.All advice welcome please
