It sounded as though the metal worked in the ignition and that just cannot be so and that is why I asked :D

The flat key is the valet key...with no buttons nor batteries.

As suggested your keys are broken...and can be fixed.

But, now that your flat key doesn't work I would suspect either the EIS or the ESL (steering lock). When you put the key into the EIS you do not hear the steering lock whirr and release...so probably the lock. See my earlier posts as to what I did.

on one hand I can agree with you, but on the other hand neither of the button keys made a noise when they went into the ignition when the flat key was working.

Did the button keys turn in the ignition?

no the button keys have never turned in the ignition, they have never made any sound when placed into the ignition either, they will only open the doors, the coils are snapped off.

as an additional thought, is there a fuse that could cause this problem.

Send one of your keys to Malcolm. When you get it back, if it will not turn suspect the EIS or the ESL.

right, I am thinking exactly the same, working from a known good key, once I get it back, if it does not turn then it is as you say EIS or ESL, but if it is either of these how do I know which one, and are they straight forward to remove, bearing in mind I cannot turn the key.

You can easily remove the EIS....there are slots around the bezzle...insert two screwdrivers opposite each other and unscrew...then disconnect from the loom.

Someone competent can then test the EIS...if it works, it's the ESL.

right, so fingers crossed, its just my key, and tomorrow when I get it back from Malcolm and put it into the ignition, it will burst into life, but if it doesn't then its stage two, which is (I presume) removal of the EIS and have it checked with the key by a competent person, as previously advise, but who do I need to check it ? do they need specialist equipment ? ie star, what sort of price would I expect to pay for this check ? and finally can anyone recommend someone in the crewe/ Nantwich area. thanks Eddie.

The transponder coil had broken off, a new one fitted and held fast with hot glue, these keys do not like getting dropped.

Would it be a good preventative measure to add some hot glue to an otherwise intact key?

Indeed yes, you cannot put it outside edge, or the pcb will not slide back into the case, but you can on the inside and the other components will hold it on, while the glue is still hot you can flatten it with your finger. Instant glues can all break.

It only want a tiny drop.

Just apply it between the square white/yellow cap and the coil

Yes Malcolm, I assumed it had from the rattle of the key, but that key had never started the car from the day I purchased the car, indeed both button keys were dead, therefore that broken coil is not a definite answer to my problem, however your repair now tells me I have at least one good key that "should" start the car, and if not I know I can move onto stage 2.
