Hi this is not a merc its my ford, but i just got my car back from having some work done, its had two new anti-roll bar Drop links as i call them?! i think it links the subfram to the top of suspension or something or other! i duno!
and its had the rubers that the roll bar sits on changed - one of the subframe bolts apparently was spinning, and i have a pic as to how he cut a hole in the side of some piece to get at the bolts
pic attached, how would you feel if this is your car? would you accept this as being the only way to get it sorted? i kinda feel a little unhappy i wasnt told before he cut the hole, and indeed that it has been left like this. just interested to know what you guys thinks, thanks in advance, steve.

I would demand they replace whatever they cut through no matter what it costs.

Looking at the bolt under the sub frame, that has been removed to lower the frame to get access to the roll bar bolt.

It is load bearing

It will, bad rust 12 inchs near any load point will fail, think a gapping hole will just about do it

I agree with the all the above comments-- but as its done now the rectification is to weld a good strong plate over the hole -they should have done that before giving it you back really.

I think if it was mine I would be going straight back to the garage and shoving the vandal's (he's not a mechanic) head into the hole.

These methods are no longer allowed in the UK

Sadly it sometimes becomes necessary to do this when the captive nut breaks free and spins, but it is very bad practice not to make the area good afterwards. It should have a small piece of the correct guage of steel welded in place, and a light rub with a sanding disc to smooth it all, and you would never know there has been a problem. Cavity wax injection from a cheap aerosol can will protect the inside and a squirt of underseal on the outside - good as new.
