Bought the above car a week ago, drove it home without the ECO functionality working at at all A is lite up on the dash but with a cross through it (had mercs in the past so aware of the peramiters it needs to work, feel that the journey warranted the eco system to kick in).
Eng running at 90 on the temp gauge, doing 30mph and auto gears are registering in D6/D7 and rev at 1000k. Seems sluggish when pulling away at junctions.
Put in Asda diesel and the engine sounds tinny, reading some reviews that's normal for these cars and supermarket fuel. Garage is taking the car in to resolve the eco issues, apparently a quick fix as they think the battery isn't 100% charged.

Are they all linked, am I looking for problems should I ask the garage to do/look at anything else whilst it's in. The car is 2017 plate with 65k on the clock

Hello and welcome,

Eco as in the stop start system? Low battery is a common cause.

General consensus on here is that your engine is better not having it working… the extra stresses applied to the engine and starter isn’t doing it any good at all.

Hi thanks for your reply yes as in when stationary the eng cuts off etc. I had it on my other car and liked the feature as I thought it reduced diesel consumption.

The car comes with full service history, but seems sluggish when pulling away and the fact it seems to go into high heard quickly seems weird.. IE doing 30mph and the dash says it's in gear D6/7..?
Like I said maybe. Looking for problems as it's already come with one :-(

Was your other car an automatic like your current car?
The reason I ask is because the way Start/Stop functions with an automatic gearbox is IMO horrendous and I hate it wth a passion!
What on earth is the point in my engine cutting out when stopping at a junction or roundabout and needing to pull out into traffic quickly? In fact sometimes the engine will cut out before the wheels have stopped turning and I want to go right now!
Another example is when arriving home I always reverse up my driveway, but my engine will cut out before I have had a chance to shift into reverse. The same applies with reversing into car parking spaces...although I appreciate very few drivers actually do this. :p

Dont get me wrong I dont hate the technology because it can actually be quite useful and is controllable with a manual gearbox, but absolutely not with an automatic gearbox so first thing I do when starting my engine is disable it.

S/S drives me mad when sitting in a queue of traffic it can cut in 10+ times - makes me wince every time it does it so turned off when leaving the drive - as above it’s much more controllable in a manual. There was a time when replacing a starter motor on a MB was a rarity not now and loading up the timing chain and valve gear adds to wear and tear - not a problem to the first owner though so MB are happy

I have nothing to add other than echo the above. Start/stop is useless and the planet and fuel consumption would far better off if people adjusted their driving style, but, this does not line the pockets of the car industry.

Also as for supermarket fuel, yes it will make your car go but, you should notice a better sound and drive using premium fuels.

If you want to improve the Cetane number of the derv far more cheaply than rip off Britain premium derv then buy some 2-EHN , you only need 40ml to make a difference to a full tank .

But from what to what is an unknown because unlike Octane for petrol , diesel has no Cetane number disclosure .

If there might be more cleaning additives in the premium this is again easily and more cheaply sorted by buying Redex when on offer for £2 that does two complete tanks .

My first experiments involved JASO FB 2 Stroke oil which is not synthetic based and low ash burn.

This alone halved my MOT smoke opacity on a high mileage 2003 Euro 3 that for it's year had a low manufacturer smoke opacity coefficient VIN sticker value of 0.60

Now with using the two and an occasional Redex it blows a very respectable 0.21 .

All easily added by pre made up Gazwould blend in empty 250ml Redex bottles , typically 200ml 2T and 40ml 2-EHN .

Happy days .
