Got to Scunthorpe earlier and the engine started making a noise when I got of the motorway - a kind of sharp noise...

got it back (20 miles, quite gently) and dismantled bits - the plugs are clean(ish), there's no emulsion... So I had the cover off. evrything is bolted down ;)
the only thing I can even see to be astray is that the non-tensioner side of the chain is a little loose. but i can't see why that would make the noise that i'm hearing. anyway...

any hints of where to start looking anyone?

Def. not pinking. It's a kind of rattling clatter... taking it to a garage (YUK!) at 10.30 for a bloke to have a listen... don't have a lot of faith though ;)

What about taking the belt off, seeing whether that stops it.

Could be the bearings, in the water pump or alternator.

Just a few ideas.

Or you could just video it, put the film on here so we can all have a listen.

Might be easier to suss out.

Cheers Roland

great idea about the belt - both pump and alternator recently replaced (gsf) - maybe cheapo crapo!

Managed to find a decent old-fashioned mechanic and have a chat with him about the engine, then old cars, then all sorts of things.

anyway, he had a listen with a "stethescope ending in a screwdriver" and thinks it could be a worn cam or cam follower(?). he also said the car was too big for his garage so he couldn't do the work for me!

better get haynes out :(

The unit that contacts the end of the valve stem and the camshaft. The follower rides on the camshaft and when the cam lobes move it upward, it opens the valve. Also called "valve lifter" or "tappet."

right. ****** techno-babble!

spent the morning under the bonnet - found the chain tensioner had stuck in its housing, freed it & now there is no rattling.
however, once the engine warmed up the "clacking" came back...
looks like i'm going back out there again now!!!

have had the car stood for couple of weeks due to no time (but managed to get bike MoTd and taxed) - so went back out to it this morning.

inspecting cam followers - front rocker. putting it back & someone must have had this off in the past, cos when i got to putting the last bolt back in, it went most of the way then just went round & round. worried, i took it back out again and was right to be worried... the head thread was nicely lodged in the bolt.

as i had previously loosened all the bolts, i decided to retighten them all and another one had thread problems

looks like a very expensive job now... anyone want to make me any opffers for parts ;)

If you are on about the bolts that hold the rockers on, it can be rectified with a helicoil

Ive had the same problem, local engineer (motorbike shop) quoted me 25.00quid per helicoil

finally a very nice man has re-coiled my holes !

suggested that noise might be from a blocked oil sprayer tube not lubricating the the mechanism - am going to put in engine cleaner and warm up the engine, then drain oil, change filter, remove the tube and soak it in gunk overnight, then clean out with oil, refit and refill engine, see how we go...

six months of waiting may be about to end...

oil sprayer tube is fine, but i have tracked the fault down to the hydraulic tappets ... will start a new thread as this one is so old now, who will look!
