Hi guys,

My car has been diagnosed as having a faulty offside rear wheel speed sensor and I'm trying to locate the wheel speed sensor on my 2003 C200 Kompressor Coupe.

I've never opened up a car wheel before and would appreciate it if a kind member of this forum could help me find where the wheel speed sensor is.

Part #1

After opening up the wheel, I could see 3 cables/wires going to the rear wheel. I opened up what I thought was the wheel speed sensor. However, after taking off the small nut and wiggling the cable out, it seems like it wasn't the sensor.
Here's a pic of that part taken out:

Same part not taken out:

The part just had a black closed off tip and I could not see any 'sensor' part to it. What is this part?

Part #2

The second cable I turned to looked like this:

I couldn't unscrew it fully as the cable was strong and kept twisting back to it's screwed position. I don't think that is the part either as it wasn't the loose sort of cable I've seen in videos of wheel speed sensors on Youtube. :)

Part #3

There was one final cable which seemed even stronger and thicker on the bottom side. I didn't take that off as it seemed difficult to open and get to and it was getting dark so I had to stop there.

Here's the best pic I could take of that cable:

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me find the correct cable.

Thanks ;)

DON'T undo the 'wire' in Part 2 ... that's the hydraulic hose for your brakes.

I'm pretty sure you've found it in Part 1 ;)

Is Part 3 different from Part 1

The sensor is in photo 1.....

Thanks Cole. I was under the impression that the sensor has some sort of metal contact area, that's why I wrote it off as possibly not being the sensor. :|

I was hoping the ABS light was due to a dirty sensor, but it seems clean. What could be the possible reason it has failed and could I replace the sensor myself?

Thanks. I partially unscrewed Part 2. Would that cause any problems? Kinda worried now. :|

Part 3 is in the final pic and it's the cable on the bottom.

I think you have just turned the hose slightly where it clips to the body. Check to see if it's wet (with brake fluid) if not, then you're OK.

Actually .... if you've turned the right hand end (as per picture ) as Xtractor says, make sure it's tight. The left hand end is where the flexi rubber hose attaches to the solid metal brake pipe.

Just make sure you re tighten the hard rubber hose in pic No3 part 2, as that is your brake hose..
Do you think you should be even taking the wheel of a car when you don't know what you are doing or looking for.. Is there someone you can get to check that all is well before you drive the car again?

I thought the light will clear itself out automatically after driving the car around for a while? If not, I guess I'll have to go to a garage to clear the fault?

I've turned the right hand end of the pic and unscrewed most of the way through the thread but didn't manage to take it off. There was some oily substance (perhaps brake fluid) as can be seen in the third picture. I did re-tighten the end of the cable, so it should be OK right?

As far as I know, my rear brakes do not work anyways because the ABS is disabled and has been for the past 2 years.

I was hoping this was just a simple unscrew and inspect job, which it is. I'd rather learn about the mechanics of my car for future knowledge and know how a car really works rather than pay a mechanic and not have a clue what was done. If it was a complex or dangerous job, I'd obviously get a mechanic to do the job :D

Thanks

Of course your rear brakes still operate, the fact that the ABS isn't working just means that you'd have to cadence brake yourself if the need arose.

but maybe practising on your brakes when you don't really know what you're doing might not be a good idea for you and the rest of us on the road

and if you unscrewed that flexi hose till it nearly came off might have not done the hose much good by twisting as much as you have done.

Hi guys,

I managed to replace the offside rear wheel speed sensor (thanks to all here).

Since replacing, 2 out of the 3 malfunctions have disappeared after driving around the block - the ABS light has gone as well as the BAS visit workshop error.

The only one that is remaining is the ESP 'visit worksop' malfunction. Any ideas what's still wrong or what I have to do?

I've tried manually turning the ESP off then back on but that didn't seem to help.

Advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks ;)
