Hi,
I posted this on a thread I had and think I should have started this new one. Please advise if I've messed up.
This is on my E320 CDI 2004 Avantgarde. W211. 722.6

Any how, So the pipe that is attached to the gearbox with a 'banjo' (?) nut....follow it from the banjo to the join. It looks like a silver straight connector with rubber either side but no nuts to tighten/loosen on it. This connector is leaking when the engine is running. Not a lot but definitely a drip every 30 seconds.

IMG_3667.jpg IMG_3669.jpg

Can I fix it or do I need a specialist with the right
tools?

I'll post a couple of pictures and try to delete them from the other thread.

Any help would be really appreciated because I'm off to Calais to buy more wine on Saturday and I need the car!

Thanks.

I'm not sure , but it looks like a metal clamp with a rubber insert to hold the pipe in position rather than connect it ? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in

Blimey you might be right. Thanks Wighty. So maybe the leak is coming from above? Will check tomorrow the local indie is putting it on his lift for me. I'll let you know the outcome.

Its definitely a retaining clamp....and the stud is holding the engine oil sump in place too. Check further along the pipe, past this retainer, towards the front of the car, and see if it's leaking at the next connection? and travelling back along the pipe?. If its only leaking at the retainer point, then maybe the pipe itself is fractured? Easy to check. Undo the retaining bolt, clean the wet area on the pipe and see if it stays dry, and if not, where exactly the oil is coming from. It's definitely transmission fluid? And not Engine oil?

Looks more like a rubber insulated P clip to me.

Rubber-Lined-P-Clips.jpg

To check what fluid it is get a piece of kitchen towel and allow a drop into it. If it's red it's ATF if yellow or black its probably engine oil.

Looks like it could be the pipe to me. Often the rubber liner disintegrates and the metal part rubs through the pipe. Some of these pipes are an absolute swine to finagle into place too.

Jim2,LostKiwi and Uncle Benz and of course Wighty. Thank you. Great powers of deduction there and I'm inspired. Having virtually no sense of smell I can't determine what the liquid is. Def not red. Too thin and clear to be oil...Could it be diesel? Hah I'll be up all night waiting to get up in the morning to get this solved. Thanks again you're all stars.

Use the white kitchen towel test. It could be diesel (pale yellow) or coolant (bluey green).

Could be diesel, filter is pretty much directly above there. Without a sense of smell you are at a disadvantage. Diesel's smell is its biggest giveaway - it stinks!

Dry it out,I think oil or diesel has got onto the rubber,I do not think it's a problem. Go and get the wine

Clean the whole area and you will then hopefully see clearly where they leak is from . Maybe don't drive it after the clean up because wind will spread the leak around , try running it on the drive first .

If its Diesel...you need to get it sorted, aside from everything else, diesel leaks need to be sorted in any case, but...diesel will rot the rubber sleeve on the pipe, and allow it to vibrate, and wear against the bracket, and it will definitely leak trans fluid then. Good Luck with it.

Gentlemen,ladies,other,
A thousand thanks. Really great support and feedback. Local indy immediately identified the drip as diesel fuel.A split hose that is attached to the fuel filter (I've uploaded a picture) Had to buy the pipe and clips from Mercedes..£15 all in. Appalling for a piece of rubber but really not complaining. Indy charged £25 to fit it and clean and re fit the undercovers
Fully intend to find a friend with a big nose no idea where I'm going to find one in London but I'll try. In my line of work a good sense of smell is a distinct disadvantage.
Off to Calais in the AM to relieve Majestic of another car load of Ricky Red or Cuvee de Richard...Lovely drop and only 2.99 euros a bottle. Medicinal purposes of course.Tried to tell the Mrs that if she stayed at home there'd be more room for extra cases...she wasn't having it.
Thanks again you all. This forum is truly excellent.

I had to change a perished pipe going to my fuel filter too. Just got a piece of fuel grade pipe and decent clips off eBay.

Thanks Wighty. Just love my Merc. I have Merc tastes with a fiat uno budget. The latest ULEZ clampdown once it extends to the North Circ will shut me down. I'm not exempt and it would break me to pay 12.50 a day to start my car. Fortunately by that time I will qualify for my freedom pass (Free tubes and buses), and then perhaps not owning a car will be a consideration. I don't blame Sadiq Khan. He's just a mouthpiece for the faceless, nameless grey suits that dictate how revenue streams are generated. In the USA they'd say, 'Suck it up'!

Hey Yugguy, how much did you pay for the bits? I needed to do it immediately or I would have gone down that route also with advice.
