Could someone please clarify the Pilot Bush for me? I have a 2000 w202 c class 200T with the 722.6 automatic gearbox in it.

I have recently bought the car and the gearbox was clunky so I decided to change the transmission fluid and filter, I drained 2.5ltrs of black fluid from the box , removed the sump, cleaned all of the fittings and bolts, copper slipped them and replaced with new gasket in place, I carefully tightened the sump pan to make sure it pulled up level and then refilled the gearbox with Mercedes genuine fluid, I now seem to have fluid flowing onto the exhaust.

I have checked the bolts on the sump and these are all tight.

I have read on lots of the posts about the pilot bush, can you tell me what this is and what it does? Do anyone have a photo of it? The Paynes Manual make no mention of it and a search on the internet just seems to show up crank type seals which do not seem to be relevant to the posts here?

I am assuming that refilling the gearbox with the correct amount of fluid has caused it to build pressure and maybe cause a leak in the pilot bush that is talked about here. I have dipped the box with the curtain wire tip shown here and have the right level.

Could anyone please confirm the capacity of the 722.6 box, Paynes says 5.5 and net searches say 7ltrs?? Does the torque converter drain when the sump drains?

Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

All 7226 boxes have the pilot bush, they will all leak at one time, convertor has a drain on your model, 6.5 ltrs will be near if you drain both, pilot bush is what the elctric plug "plugs" into the gearbox, held in with a 7mm nut!

If you have taken 2.5 litres of atf out, not emptied the torque converter, and put back 5.5 litres, then you've grossly overfilled it. I'm not surprised there's atf leaking from every orifice!:shock:

I did drain the torque converter but thank you for pointing that out :)
