Well, as the title says, (I pick my car up on Friday C180) and just rang the MBOA insurance line for a quote. Less than £220 fully comp with business use!
I think thats the cheapest insurance I have had on a car for many years, why didnt I discover MB years ago, I could have saved a fortune!

Will give them a call when my insurance is due, started out at ~600 fully comp when the ML was brand new, now they want ~1100++, no accidents, getting older all the time, getting less facilities (ie. days in Europe) and its still going up!!!

Who underwrites their insurance? Is it Norwich Union? Ive just got cover on an SL55 through Merc website , 6 points on licence £990.00, which was the cheapest I could find. This included Business and NO Tracker fitted.

Does MBOA require tracker fitting?

Thats an unbelievable difference. I know you confirmed it with Esure but it does seem a big margin. (£408)

MBOA use Zenith, they asked if I had a tracker fitted, I didnt. I had a couple more quotes at a similar price to £220, one was Quoteline Direct.
Mind you, that was with over 30 years driving with no claims and an IAM membership!

In my case the MBOA use Norwich union, stupid thing is that my V70R is with NU and being group 17 is £325. When I bought the SL I just rang them and insured it on a new policy for £615, with no no claims discount. At the start of the following renewal they wanted £675, so I rang MBOA and got it for £425, this being under written by NU.

Be very careful of Norwich Union, I got well stung by them on No Claims.

I had well over 12 years no claims (I havent had an accident or claim in a very long time, and I lost my NCD when I was living fulltime in Japan, because NCD is lost if you dont have insurance for 2+ years), and I switched from Privilege after they wanted ~1200 back in 2002 (Id been with Privilege since 1995, but there new policy is they dont want long time customers, as long time customers without accidents are a higher risk). I switched to Norwich as the quote was ~800 (I dont have exact figures, quoting from memory) for 2 years. Then, the troubles started! Norwich Union only issue NCD for '5 or more years', but other insurers, such as Fortis go on the exact number of years NCD (irrevelvant of %). To cut a long story short, after numerous hirated arguments by phone, letter and Solicitors letters (trying to get money out of me), I had to put my NCD as '5 or more years'!!!

One of the reasons for my high quotes is that I need 365day European cover and a lot of insurers limit you to 60 or so days per year, with a max number of days per trip!

Just to re-iterate the above: Go into Norwich Union with 12 or more years NCD, and when you leave them, they issue you with a certificate, 'NCD 5 or more years'. ie. You lose ALL YOUR NCD from 5 years to what you had when you joined them.

I have never claimed on my car insurance and have been driving for over 30 years. I have never had a policy that takes this into account, all of them put "over 5 years" as the max NCD they offer. Bit of a con, I always thought, by my reckoning, they should be paying me for taking out insurance with them!

A lot are asking for number of years NCD now, and penalise you if you put 12 years down and can only provide a Certificate saying '5 or more years', hence the Solicitors getting involved as I refused to pay the difference (out of principal). Swinton is one example, with Fortis insurance group.

Ooops! Just remembered, I did have an accident in '97, but not my car/insurance, so NCD not affected, only premium for a short while! Blinded round a bend (whilst adjusting the stereo!!!!) and ran into a Parked Golf!!!!!!

I got the free cover for a week or whatever when I got my C180 last November and the full quote was in the 400's, whereas Esure was in the 200's. I couldn't work out how MB insurance got any business. I'm 49 and have never had a claim, do about 9000 per year, cover was self and spouse.

Just received my Insurance from MasterQuote covering me for the final 2months of my present cover transfered from my Volvo 440....cost £58 including increased premium not to bad when some firms charge you £70 + for changing cars as admin costs. There quote for the C250 for a year was £270 fully comp which was about average of 6 online insurers.(Most brought up AXA as the cheapest which is my present insurer.)
When searching I found this site I have never used them but they seem to offer unbelievable deals http://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk/ There quote for fully comp was £228 So in 2 months time I shall be checking them out. They also offer a lifetime guarantee on NC bonus and monthly insurance which would have been handy for me a couple of years ago when I was changing cars every couple of months. Starting to sound like an advert for them but they could help some forum members who are being hammered for premiums. Pointed a friend there way yesterday and he has just went from £890 to £460 a hefty chunk of change.
PS; what is the address or phone number for this MBOA insurance as I would like to check them out too.

Barry, thanks for the info on Ecarinsurance. I was looking for a company that did monthly insurance. I have an old `93 Discovery in my garage needing an MOT. It has been sorned for 3 months, no mot or insurance, till now. Now I can legally drive it to the mot station on Saturday for it to fail before I sell it!!

Does anyone use Zurich?

We had to get insurance on a 2nd car (Fiesta) for the other half; after trying lots of online insurers the differences were amazing:
Zurich - £1150 was the highest
Directline - £340 was the most reasonable with acceptable terms.
She IS only 26 :)
Managed to get it for £240 through her Royal Bank os Scotland Royalties Account.
Why would anyone pay over £1000 to insure a 1400cc car?

Regards

Well W202's C-180's are cheap to insure...they are dead slow performance wise ! Check the 0-60 time in automatic form. It's the slowest 1800 on the market.I pay £180 comp with admiral for a 97.
I always shop around on renewal quotes through sites like http://www.confused.com.
For a group 19 car (BMW 740i) last year I was paying £280 TPFT.

My son had to pay £1900 to insure his new 1.2 Clio, he couldn't afford to renew the insurance so hd to sell the car (paid 9.5K in May 05 and sold it in March 06 for 5K...that's quite some depreciation!!!) bought a Fiat Brava and was quoted £1100.00 TPF & T but when it came to renewal that quote increased to £1300.00.........£1300 to insure an 8 year old 1.6 Fiat.....has the world gone mad????? Cost me £450 to insure my SLK fully comp with Directline but they insisted on a tracking device, still a bargain compared to what the young 'ens have to pay these days. Surprisingly though, there are still lots on the road.....which makes you wonder how many are actually insured..!

I paid a lot more than that for my Sierra Cosworth and I was over 30! Wouldnt touch me until I got to 30 and I was desperate for a Cossie.

Im over 40 now and still paying over 1grand, and apart from the prang due to sunlight in '97, and the attempted theft of my Cossie from Manchester Airport in '95, I havent been involved in any other claims/accidents (I didnt claim for the Cossie), so I get heavily penalised, for what reason, I dont know!
