I have a 2010 Mercedes 300c 4matic sport. There is a grinding/ scratching noise coming from the front end that increases with speed. I’m not sure if it’s brakes, wheel bears or something worse.

Hello and welcome,

Jack the car up and spin the wheels - see which side is causing the noise - then take the wheel off and check - could be worn out brakes or a number of things

I’m currently recovering from shoulder surgery so I’m unable to jack the car up at the moment. I don’t believe it to be the brakes the sound doesn’t seem to change when or if I use the brakes and the car stops smoothly. The noise also is present when the car is coasting in neutral however it does seem slightly louder when I accelerate than it does on decel.

Could be wheel bearings, or possibly noisy alternator belt or pulley.

Possibly a bit of road debris stuck in the disc backplate.

A stone stuck between the back plate and disc makes a terrible sound.

Sometimes reversing can remove a stone.
