I have a 1994 SL320, and have a problem with the soft top roof operation.

Removing the roof into stowage works fine. (and I can drive the car with no roof alarm buzzer)

On attempting to close the roof the sequence works up to the roof locking into the front slots above the windscreen.
The sequence then stops (switch flashing) with the rear portion of the roof continuing driving toward the front of the car. (to ensure the rear shelf will not foul as it lowers into position?).
The rear shelf remains up.

By removing power I can manually close the shelf & roof then once down with pins in position then operating the switch will lock the roof in position.

Once I move then the alarm sounds.

I am assuming that the feedback from the front switches is not there?
If this is the case then how do I get access to check the switches? I assume that they are electrical feedbacks from the bottom of the locator?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thankyou very much for that Malcolm and thank you for your welcome.

I am confident (?!) its one of the two front switches S84/1 or /2
I have the top off at the moment and am looking at a way to expose these switches. I see no obvious way of removing the trim above the visors. I realise its having the confidence to force it probably but I don't want to damage the panel, any tips anyone on removing this?

I have sent you another info sheet,,I need to find the one for the top rail trim and cant do this till this evening.

The roof sequence paper shows what goes on and where, it still could be the rear cover

hello mark, have you tried to lock the front catches manually with the hex key, then operate the switch for the rest of the sequence? it`s just you say you have done this and manually locked the rear bow as well. it could be that the front catches are not locking completely.

these roofs do suffer many different types of problem, but i have seen this scenario before; front hydraulic catches not latching fully. the problem was an internal leak within one ram causing excessive pressure loss to the other side circuit (within the ram - they are two way acting) which returns to the pump unit.

hopefully the info colin sent gives you the test procedure for the front microswitches, it`s just a matter of testing at the control unit pins.

just re-read your post and you are definately thinking the right way, try those catches at the screen with the hex key. access behind trim plugs behind sun visors.

Morning all, thanks Alexander, I had tried turning the manual locks incase this would give the correct feedback, to no avail. The hydraulic system in the boot seems ok, I checked last week so I don't think there is a leak.

I was going to skive out of the office for an hour this morning for another more detailed look (no opportunity at the weekend) but its raining now so not ideal for taking the roof off really!

I will take a DVM to the controller this afternoon, anyone have a curcuit diagram? Ill try and see if those switches are actually making once and for all. (Could still be a relay in the "box" i guess).

Malcolm, did you find the top rail trim removal info?

As an aside the roof controller itself failed a couple of months ago, I sent it to BBA Reman and they sorted the issue, but the roof has been operated dozens of times since the change with no problem whatsoever...

OK, a few hours work and the following seems to be the case.

Note. To access the (top locked) actuators and switches you remove the very top trim not the one underneath with the rear view mirror attached. You don't need to remove it first either, the top one comes off on its own and very much easier. But... I do know how to do it for next time!

The ram operates fine on both actuators but the micro switch on the lock on the driver side (S84/2) does not changeover when the ram is fully in. I can frig the plunger in and out but the contacts are not changing over. The off side unit changes over fine just with manual operation of the lock (just as the plunger reaches the last 3 mm of travel).

Now to see how much I'll be charged for a new micro switch and wiring assembly. Hopefully it's sold separately?

Thank you for everyones help and especially all the diagrams.

I hope to be posting a final note confirming restored operation, just before my trip on Friday to Scotland fishing!

sorry mark, i could have saved you that trouble!

were you able to test the output from this microswitch at the controller module with malcolm's info? or is that why you wanted the wiring diagram? if you search on the russian parts info site you will see what is available.

Thank you for the guidance on the replacement and setup Malcolm, I'll try and get hold of a switch in the next day or so. Like I said I want to get it fixed for the weekend.

Hi Alexander, no worries. I didn't know the pin outs, but as the switch is at fault I would have had to get at it anyway.

Morning again, I seem to be becoming a pest!

I checked out the "Russian site?" I assume this is as linked below?

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...632f087080&CT=F&cat=515&SID=80&SGR=180&SGN=07

I just can't find a part for the micro switch alone?

So, I've called 2 dealers up, £300 for the full assembly only.

Now starting to scratch around... I have a couple of calls out but looking for inspiration?

Any good sites / contacts? How do I find the actual part number I need? Is that what the "Russian Site" gives in the left hand column?

Is this switch the same as any more modern (available) items?

Next question will be where can I stop the buzzer going off on the roof control switch!

Cheers,

Mark
