Prise up the leather gator from the bottom, it just unclips, pull it up inside out over the knob. undo the collet nut at the bottom of the knob ½ turn and the knob pulls up and off. Keep your chin out of the way, I knocked myself out with one..

It was a bit of a nightmare! I might be over in Bridgend at some point soon so let me know if you need a hand with anything.

hello,
I've been looking for a solution for the same problem, I've read through this forum and others as well, but me and the service station could not solve the problem yet.

Sympthon: gear selector stuck in P.
What we've done so far: replaced brake switch; it's working. Tried "hammering" (
), it did not help. The mid console is partially disasembled, pls see attached photos.

The problem: the mid console can not be removed completely, because of the position of the gear shift.

Should we move the gear shift with "brute force", pulled very aggressively, risking it may brake, or?

Thank you very much for your feedback in advance.

Best Regards,
Istvan

MB simply replace the whole unit at a cost of c £800 incl fitting or at least that’s what it cost me to get mine done ..

Can’t fix it yourself until you get it out though ...

I've tried to search for the youtube video, but I couldn't find it yet.
I found some posts, but they are for SLxxx and not for SL55. Pls see the pics for difference, marked with red; on SLxxx, it's easy, because the mid console is made of two parts, and the lower part is easy to remove, then gear selector is easy to out.
However on SL55, my mid console is made of one big part, which we couldn't twist to get it out yet.

Should we brake the mid-console and get a new one? I've searched for the price of it (230 680 5639), you won't believe how much it is: 3300€.

My SL500 console is one piece? As is my spare one...

My thoughts exactly.
Checking EPC for mine (ex yours) suggests it's a one piece console as well.

Never heard of that hammering technique before!

Malcolm had me hammering that SL when it did this (to no avail)
