Thank you Malcolm.
Via my phone now so excuse any mistakes.
Would the ground not get switched on with the coding?
God I wish I was nearer to you.

Not at all, the missing ground is part of the install,,,the coding only puts the output into the SAM

Maybe I can look up the wiring in WIS to see for sure what the ground pin is

Do you need my VIN ?
It is:
2 0 3 0 1 6 2 R 1 8 2 0 8 9

The wire colours are:

Red = +12v
Purple striped = ground
Brown striped = signal

A thought

Hi Malcolm.
Would there be anything to stop me using a ground wire off the original 4 pin plug that went into the old sensor?
If I can then what colour would be the ground wire ?

Right I have been printing off the diagram, this show the different 2 and 3 wires, but I have no way of telling what should be ground, ground leads are brown and there is no brown on the B38,, the wiring is on the diagram for the 4 pin version B32 but again no brown and no way to know.

Is there more than one connector in the OCP

I can Email the diagrams to you as they are printed off

There are many plugs Malcolm.
5 or 6 I think.
There is the original 4 pin plug which went to the old sensor. That is unplugged and tucked out of the way.
You buy a small loom from MB that has 3 wires.
This plugs into a spare lilac coloured socket on the OCP.
The other end plugs into the new combined rain and light sensor.

Pleas will you e mail me the diagrams to:

Thanks for your efforts Malcolm.

Malcolm the centre wire is brown striped.
I am thinking of touching it to earth and then a quick prayer.
Am I likely to blow up anything ?

You can edit out your address

With the ignition turn off, measure this wire that comes from the OCP to ground and see if it is at ground potential, so the resistance should be near zero ohms. reverse the meter wires to make sure there is no diode effect

Hi Malcolm..
He follwed the instructions which I had printed out from members who had done this succesfully..
The instructions were:

STEP 1:
CONTROL UNIT
BODY
OCP
CONTROL UNIT ADAPT
PERFORM CODING RLS IN CONTROL UNIT SAM-F
ACTUATION
INITIALIZE B38 SENSOR

STEP 2:
FUNCTION COVERING CONTROL MODULES
COMPLETE VEHICLE
LIGHTING
EXTERNAL LIGHTING
AUTO DRIVING LIGHT ON & AUTO HEAD ON
SAM FRONT SIGNAL AQUISITION AND......
CONTROL UNIT ADAPTATION

Simon the info I have differs slightly

CONTROL UNIT
BODY
OCP
CONTROL UNIT ADAPT
PERFORM CODING RLS IN CONTROL UNIT SAM-F
CONTROL UNIT ADAPTIONS
RAIN/LIGHT SENSOR
SELECT AND ADJUST RAIN/LIGHT SENSOR VARIANT -COMBINED VERSION "HELLA"

STAR says one only intialises the sensor on replacement of the windscreen.

It cannot work with no ground can it,,,if it was working the light sensor would probably be working OK

Thanks again Malcolm.

It is a pig the the printer cut the pages smack in the middle of the B38 and B 32 but by scrolling down they can be read

I have my car booked in with the MB dealership.
I have explained what's been done and he didn't seem to think there would be an issue.
I have recently been e mailed by someone who has pointed out that STAR needs to be in " developer mode" in order to enable the mod.
Could this be where it's all been going wrong ?

It is a shame that the old one was thrown, you could have plugged that back in and measured the voltages,,,,sadly there is no way to tell from the WIS circuits what type the output is.

To program you just go to wipers and tick the box for rain sensitive, or go to the SAM that they are wired into,,,its the same thing but going in the back door.

The diagram gave the year for the changes in the 3 wires, good luck, lets hope they sort it, its horrible when things go pear shaped and so hard to know why

The wiring is still there malcolm as is the original plug.. That has been taped up and hidden behind the headlining...
The new loom consists of 3 wires and is only about 7" long..It costs £7...
There is an alternative loom that costs £35 and has to come from Germany.. Don t ask me what the difference is though..

People slag off the Windows operating system but at least it is genuinely plug and play (Well Windows 7 is)..:)

Without the old sensor plugged in the is no load and pins will give meaning less voltages,, what really puzzles me is why they should choose to reverse two wires at a certain date, lets hope their man is good with electrics Simon.

At least with broken screens they do get loads of practice on this feature

If all else fails Simon, I might suggest you treat your windscreen with Rain Ex.

Above 40mph the screen will clear itself of water as the water finally atomises on the screen. Actually, above 20 you really need not use the wipers very often.

I've used Rain Ex on all my cars, and really rate it as a product even better than auto wipers and lights.

Rain X messes up rain sensitive wipers

His aren't though, hence this thread? Thought the whole circuit is dubbed and for a tenner out of halfords this could all have been avoided.

All you need to do is treat the screen and make sure you don't treat the bit the sensor.

Once you have a rain ex'd screen auto wipers are a thing of the past anyway.

Its a fabulous product:cool:
