Replacement fob, plastic instead of metal?

Hi everyone,

Question for anyone who knows about replacement fobs via the dealer:

Went into a dealership, paid for a replacement fob and key. £240. No problem with that, it's the price for a replacement. I asked what it would look like, and the parts specialist stated something like the chrome one he pulled out of a drawer, failing that like the new A class key. Refused to confirm it would be a chrome one. He said he could not specify that via the code. Whatever they have in stock is what will be sent out.

Return the following week to collect it. It is the same as the chrome sided one in style, however the whole thing is black plastic, which looks like it will degrade the same way as the original remote for my 2001 elegance estate.

Took the remote back into the dealer after trying it and asked to return it. He asked why, and I said it is of inferior quality to the one I was shown. I then asked whether any of the other remotes, namely the metal ones, would work with my car and he said that's the only one that would work with my chassis number.

I said I'm not paying for a piece of plastic and again requested a refund and proof they had received the key from me.

I then stopped one of their guys in the car park and asked if the metal chrome remotes work with my car considering it's age, he said he didn't see why not. He tried to back track a bit to protect parts service presumably when he realised I will complain next week, but he didn't see why the chrome key would not work.

What I want to know is is there any dealer who can guarantee the better quality metal ones from the outset? I just can't believe everyone gets a plastic key like that for their cars. It was the same, exactly the same as the chrome key, but no metal at all.

Thoughts anyone? Tempted to try a few other dealers and check their policies.

Never heard of a metal fob? Thought they were all plastic, newer ones have 'chrome' sides/shoulders. AMG fobs have metal back plate embossed with the AMG logo.

But no all metal fobs...

The 210 key came in two types, what we call the long key and the short one.

I understood that the short key stocks ran out 2 years back and only the chrome ones sent out now. there has never been a chrome key for the long version.

I do not have a picture of the long key and only the inside PCB but this is the short key.

Sorry, my bad description. It's not all metal, just the sides. Picture hopefully attached.

The one they handed me had plastic instead of chrome sides. The chrome sided one i held last week felt much meatier and solid. This one looks like it would break if I dropped it.

Those are the current keys used today on 90% of the cars and the only ones like this.

You mean the ones in the photo or the black plastic one I was given instead

I think I'd have been p'd off if I'd paid for what I'd expected to be a chrome sided key & received the all plastic version. It was only the other day I realised that the newer style key had an all plastic option .... all the newer style keys I've seen around & about have been the chrome sided versions.

But there is an all plastic version of this style

Not for 2 years as I recall, they do not give you the option, the chrome side has been the only one supplied for ages. The printed circuit boards are not the same

Exactly!

I thought I might get something crap by the way I was being told they couldn't order the fob until they knew the style of key being cut in Germany.

They couldn't believe it when I returned it.

I am still unclear of what key you have been sold, is it as the ones in your picture

I can't even find a photo online of the one I was given.

Identical shape as new chrome, but all plastic. Just crap. Going to check out some other dealers on Monday, I'm sure one of them will try to help.

In post 3 I have put up a picture of the original all plastic key, if they have sold you one of those the most odd and do go back and complain.

Definitely not that.

Identical shape to the chrome version in my photo, but no chrome. The whole thing is all plastic, even the sides. Wish I'd taken a photo to show how crap it looked.

Believe me I've looked. Just can't find an all plastic version of the latest chrome key anywhere.

There is not one that I have seen, unless yours is the long key as in my first post
