Believe me I've looked. Just can't find an all plastic version of the latest chrome key anywhere.

Neither could I.

It was only the other day when I was as my mate's house when I used his new key to open his 55/56 plate E class estate that I knew there was an all plastic version

There is not one that I have seen, unless yours is the long key as in my first post

I'll take a photo of my mate's all plastic new style key alongside my old style fob when I next see him. ;)

To clarify, the one I thought I would receive is in that picture. The one I received was like that but all black plastic.

Seriously, they tried to palm you off with an all plastic key...just as they were when your car was new??? Unbelievable!!

but a differenter all plastic key

I know...of inferior quality. Funny though, I presume the original all plastic (yuck) key lasted 13 years...longer than the car will last?

Yet another example of a first world problem...sometimes I despair.

This is the standard key issued from about 2000 on right up to about 2006, apart from cars that use the flip out key there is no other, the chrome version has replaced this key.

If the long key up to 2000 on a 210, then no chrome case and only the original supplied

These are the only 3 keys in existence, other than the flip out.the first being the long key and no chrome version for that one.

The original key for the OP's car was the middle one.

However, it does seem from what the OP has said that MB are now producing casings the same as the chrome one on the right...but all in black plastic...quel dommage.

That first key was used on the 1999 210 cars, I have repaired enough of them.

I have never heard of any all black new key,, he has said the picture that I put up before is not his key, so that just leaves the first one and no chrome case for that, and never has been one.

Nothing new, the chrome on looks longer than the plastic version it replaced.

I will guarantee he has the first one.

And then got stiffed in to getting a return on a key they cannot resell, and thus lost £200.

I thought one could not return special order parts, unless faulty, not simply because one doesn't like it?

I found the keys did not last well.

The plastic button often cracked.

Whilst I appreciate this is a first world problem, the fact that I have had to fork out for a new key that feels like cheap plastic when all the others I see are more solid with metal components makes me think I'd rather manually lock the doors than spend on something I don't think will stand up to the task, and not what was suggested I would receive.

The key you have only had a 18 month run. If looked after they will last OK.

best not to put them on a house ring as the metal house keys can damage them.

The one that took your order probably did not know much about keys, and did not know that there was no chrome version of your key.

Maybe just use existing board etc, and one of these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-...752?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3f330ecd68
