"Killed alarm capability"?

Does it lock the car remotely?

I thought my key set the alarm when I locked it? Am I missing something?
Should I press the button more times for the alarm (it only has 3 buttons)
Do I need to hold a button down?
How do I check the alarm without breaking in?

Neil

I meant since going through the wash it stopped me from being able to use the remote to set the alarm and central locking. So manual key locking only.

Given the amount of confusion that has arisen, I wish I had never said anything now.

I just thought it might be useful for everyone to know what they may be getting next time they go in to get a replacement key. I am honestly surprised that I'm the first one to get given on of these.

When I'm shown a nice shiny chrome key, told it will be like that or a different shape depending on what key shape is cut in Germany (I assumed the only key is the chrome version) and then given a plastic alternative that looks like a knock off of the original chrome key I thought I'd share my findings.

Next time I'll take a picture!

You gave the replacement key back and got a refund?

I gave the key back, it was accepted, told refund would be processed on Monday.

To cover myself, I requested written confirmation the key had been received by them and that it had been rejected. Written confirmation of the rejection and return was given and signed by the person who originally gave the key to me.

Perhaps, in light of what some of you have said regarding special order items, there will be no refund. However at no point was I told the refund would not be given. And as far as I can see it, Mercedes have accepted rejection of the item and taken the key back.

If there are no refunds on these items then they should not take them back at all in my opinion.

So now you have to unlock and lock it with the blade???

Just because you didn't like the look of the key?

Like I said, next time I won't bother to say anything.

I'm sure everyone else will be extremely happy to go from the chrome key to an all plastic one.

The thread has been confusing, so far no one else has received a plastic key for some years as has been said.

You say that the key you were sold was like the chrome one but all plastic. All we can do is to wait and see if anyone else gets this type of key, as we have never seen one.

The only other person on this thread who has seen one is Emilysdad. He confirmed he'd be ****ed if he had to pay £240 for it.

As you say, it must be something new because I can't find a photo of them anywhere and I have owned all the plastic keys you showed in your photos.

The chrome keys that came out about 2006/7 and all cost £225 for some years.

So far what we have learnt is that the new chromes ones replace all the older types, (Thanks Andy) we are now on generation 2 of the chrome type (the back comes off)

Could there be version 5 coming out now all plastic. We will know soon.

Have Mercedes realized that the chrome keys are not breaking fast enough.

Have Mercedes found that a few ounces of weight can be saved.

Any change will be down to their suppliers.

Only the Vito left! W639/1 OM646

Two replacement keys from Mercedes last year for my 2007 Vito (left) and 2005 C-class (right).

The Vito key cost me £176.00 and the C-class key cost me £227.00 !

Obviously an extra £51 worth of technology goes into the C-class key!!!!

And there it is. And let me tell you, the weight difference is extraordinary. The chrome version felt like it would never break. The plastic one is not worth the money.

The second generation key as supplied with batteries and metal blade weighs in at 30g and the first generation chrome key 43g, so 13g difference.

A £1 coin together with a 1p weighs 13g.

The difference in the new plastic one can only be with the brass sides and top.

With the first and second generation key, the only part that ever wore out were the press button area's that eventually split.

The chrome version does feel nicer to the touch to me, button working wise no difference between them.
