The second generation key as supplied with batteries and metal blade weighs in at 30g and the first generation chrome key 43g, so 13g difference.

A £1 coin together with a 1p weighs 13g.

The difference in the new plastic one can only be with the brass sides and top.

With the first and second generation key, the only part that ever wore out were the press button area's that eventually split.

The chrome version does feel nicer to the touch to me, button working wise no difference between them.

Interesting to know those weights, the brass sides definitely made it feel stronger and meatier to me when I held the one they showed me.

I guess I kind of feel like they're going backwards with the quality with this new all plastic version.

The chrome version certainly feels heavier than it is, it think it just the feel of it that is nicer, the plastic version cases will appear on Ebay one day for £10, that will help. I have never seen a damaged case on any chrome version yet.

Those 5th generation keys are a great improvement on the 2nd generation keys, don't ya think.
Indeed maybe even better than the chrome, glitsy keys. So much more discreet, less flashy when placed on the bar top, and lighter in the pocket too. Can't be bad.

I'd wonder if they will ship the all plastic units for replacements now and only provide the chrome ones when the car is first sold? saves money on replacements but keeps the new car buyers happy with blingy keys.

Slightly off topic/hijack (apologies).....

I posted a thread asking whether my W210 key (key 2 in this thread) could have the plastic case swapped out for a chrome one http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=137872

The answer was no, but this thread seems to say otherwise? Doesn't the one in the ebay link (posy #84) fit my key?

I do not know about the Ebay chrome case, the PCB will not fit into the MB chrome case, you should ask the vendor;)

Thanks Malcolm, I think that clears that up and looking closely the ebay one is not the same as the MB one
