Hi all
Has anyone had seized pins when trying to remove their brake pads. Apparently the pins are steel and the caliper is alloy = corrosion/seizing.
Solution to drill out pins and get a new pin pack from merc! Cars only done 23k on a 09 plate. This only happened on one side, the other was fine.
If anyone has a better idea to remove the pins please let me know!
Cheers

Had a similar issue with my rear pins. Tried various things to drift them out, but none of them were strong enough and bent.

Then I found an old hardenend steel Allen key of an interference fit, and cut it to about 2". Carefully sprayed the rear of the pin with WD40. I put the allen key on the pin and gave it a hard clump with a hammer. It was enough to get the pin moving, and then drift out completely.

The allen key did still bend, but not as much as some of the other things I tried. Also when replacing them, I used a small amount of copper ease to hopefully stop them getting stuck again.

Just came back from garage and the pins are not coming out. They have welded themselves in for want of a better word. They tried the above but the pin just sheared off leaving the rest in place. This is obviously a common problem looking at other threads in the forum. Just my luck!

No 1 You need the correct size punch, good weight of hammer and support the caliper by wedging wooden blocks behind.
Proper penetrating oil "WD40 isn't" also helps knocking from both ends helps, rotating the pins with mole grips helps, cleaning the surface corrosion with a wire brush before starting helps, have done a lot in my youthier times and never drilled any pins out even beach running models.

http://www.bennetts.com/p0/premier-mechanics-punches-chisels/80863.htm

For penetrating fluid home made, acetone and auto box fluid.
Or depending on material aluminium cleaner (Acid based one)

They look very useful, so many try nails and god knows what else and mess up the hole

A slight bit of heat and a sharp tap to the housing works, never failed yet to remove one, had to cut them in the centre of the pin then knock them out......

The last time I had this problem, my pin punch tool (Teng tool) just bent, eventually broke.
Is that lazer set any better?

I ended up using a G clamp, along with a 1/4" drive 10mm socket (pin head end), a 1/4" drive 3mm allen bit as a drift (pointy end) and "pressed" the pin out.

Supprised me how difficult it was to remove, as the pin was not fitted that long ago, and it was copper slip coated when fitted.

Just read this article as I too have seized brake pins in the calipers on my 2005 CL500.

Just to correct something in the previous helpful comments above....

The pad retaining pins are a 2-part component:-
1). The guide pin itself
2). The split/expanding dowel

Getting the pins to turn with mole grips will only confirm the the pin is now free from the outermost part of the caliper. At the innermost part of the caliper, it's NOT the pin that gets siezed in, but the expanding split dowel. This is the part that actually grips on the caliper and keeps the pins where they are.

Sometimes, as I had to do yesterday on my CL, the best way is to grind/cut through the pad retaining pins then knock each of the 2 remenants out with a high quality pin pinch nof the correct diameter.
Using nails and screws to knock them out will only confirm your Neanderthal status and end up wrencking a caliper.!

I had this on my Brembo front calipers on my w203. Someone had fitted incorrect pins which had interracted and caused them to swell. Caliper off job and they had to be drilled out.

I bought the correct pin kit costing around £30 from merc

Luckily did,nt have to have new calipers. Silly money

Pad pin kits available from Eurocar Parts for ALL Mercs at around £16 per axle set!
In fact I don't know why so many Merc owners go to their main dealer ??? For my CL500 I've just bought 2 x 330mm cross drilled ventilated Pagid discs and a front set of Pagid pads all for just £109.35 !!!!!!!

All i do is push the pistons back with the pad in situ then get a pair of mole grips on the pin and simply work up and down applying a bit of WD40.

Not hard and always come out that way. On installation, use some graphite grease on the pin.

Believe me, the pins on my calipers were NOT coming out in a month of Sundays.!
I had to cut the pins, remove the pads then tackle the remenants of the pins when they were shorter with a good punch and some localised head.

The main thing needed in removing the pins is a good sized punch, I made my own by grinding down a punch 10" long, and as Steve wd40 and rotating them they do normally come out.

I have had many people say that, but i have never ever had trouble.
