Hi all

Another day another problem my 02 sl500 has yet another problem:confused: it never rains?????

'Service brakes visit workshop' warning popped up on my console today, thought it was advising me to replace pads, i wish .
Took it to Merc hooked up the comptuer, it advised that the SBS control box had reached the end of its useable life:!: and needs replacing £850 plus VAT and thats just the part, and it will take a whole day to repair as it takes 4 people just to bleed the brakes???

Im SICK!!!!

It will cost about £1500 min to put right.
Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know of a cheaper route to take as £1500 is steep for anyones pocket.

thanks in advance

steve

I've not come across this one before. Sorry I cannot help you other than try getting a quote from an Indy.

I have seen the odd unit come up on ebay though for around £500, I've always thought about buying one for a spare.

never thought of ebay, i could take it to an indie which would reduce labour costs but i will still have to fork out for the part you should defo get a spare if one comes up.

SBS is a serious bit of kit though stopping to a complete standstill in secs i nearly ploughed into the side of another car a few months back hit the brakes full force and really did expect to go into a skid or at least roll into him it really was that close i braced myself for impact but it stopped DEAD, any other car would of ploughed straight into him, so it defo does the job but £1500 when it goes wrong???????

Steve.what is the milage of the car, at the worst I would find a good indie as dave says. I do not believe that it is a 4 man job to bleed, I will check that out.

Thanks Dave just checked the link on ebay, is SBC the same as SBS though? If so this would be ideal it looks like what he pointed to under the bonnet. ill check the part number tommorow, fingers crossed:)
Hi Malcom 63000miles its covered he said its hit and miss they do have a life expentancy some may last the life of the car others may go as early as 40,000 he also said hes changed 150 in the last year so there must be a fault on them in general ??? SBS only on the E class and SL.

52K in total - 45 with MB & 7 with an Indie. Only things changed have been tyres and pads and disk's (touch wood).

Bit of a difference in prices Dave.....was going to bid for the first one, but don't want to get involved in a bidding war.
Just wait 'till/if mine goes I suppose :(

Incidentally to steant: Had my brake fluid changed on last service (MB Dealer) and it cost just over £200 + VAT.
Can't see how they can tell you it's a full day?

BIG difference in price, ill stick with the £199 one thanks:eek: and dont you people be bidding im desperate you guys count yourselves lucky haha.
ive found another one from a breaker £225 used he reckons its from an 05 e55 with 17.5K ??? dont know whether to believe this but again a much more sensible option.
Merc are well having me off 4 people just to bleed the brakes??? full day job??? ill try an indie

Four people to bleed the brakes is complete rubbish. I have changed these units for this reason although it has only ever been on much higher mileage taxis. Mb times are 3.3 hours to replace + 4 bottles of brake fluid (it does pump a lot through) + the price of the unit. It is easier to do the job with 2 people but I have bled system many times on my own, as for 4 people, I wouldn't even like to comment on their capabilites/experience. Do not pay this. See if MB will contribute due to low mileage & try another dealer. This is a specialist job to bleed the brakes, some indies will not take the job on. Where abouts are you?
