when I was in Rivervale cars (MD Authorised repair shop) in Brighton last week there was a very nice SL500 up on the ramp and I said to the guy I'd just do a swap for my car and the chief mechanic said I'd be better off sticking with my dodgy C-Class.

He said they have had nothing but trouble with the brakes on the SL. He said they have even had recalls on the recall work they have done (if you see what I mean). Think I'd still have one though....

So what do you say to that Malcolm?

Of the 20 or so owners that I know, I would say poppy cock, take a look on the USA forums, hardly any post on the subject, only had one here.

And they are still making them with SBC.

SBC is being dropped. It has already been axed on the face-lift E class.
It has a form of SBC but is quite different. We have has 2 pumps fail tests this week & have had to be renewed - they were both still under warranty. Is this the start of something?? Hopefully not. :(

I have read about the new version, no sign of it being dropped on the SL and the new one is 2 years away.

I was a happy contented man until you posted :( :( :(

Someone pointed out to me, way back when I started posting (may have been you actually Malcolm) that reading these posts is a bit like having a copy of Blacks Medical Dictionary; read a few pages and your sure you've got the lot! If you've had no problems, and neither have the other people you mention then I'm sure it's fine. Like you say, I haven't seen any other posts on the subject.

I do not worry thanks Neil, I enjoy the car too much, if something goes, its not the end of the world, Its only just coming up to 20k.

As I have the keyless go, and locked in the garage, just by walking past it, if i brush past the door handle it unlocks and this starts the SBC pump as it thinks that it is going to be driven, so I avoid that now. Most of the cars that I have owned have horror stories attached.

If it aint broke.................................

The later one may well be 2 years away on the SL but it has already changed on the E. I just hope it proves to be as good as they say, luck of the draw I suppose. I've seen SLs with 70k+ & no probs but there's always a few unlucky ones.

I know this hyjacking the thread a little but I am sure there are many of you who will be greatly amused by this. As you are all no doubt aware my car is now at TP having a bunch of uneccessary work done (my choice to have it done I hasten to add) so I have a 06 plate Vectra courtesy of Tesco. Picked it up Thursday; Saturday morning I had to call the AA out because it broke down :(

I strongly recommend that you don't let me anywhere near your cars at the Summer GTG!

(btw, it was just a flat battery. Looks like the previous occupant had left one of the interior lights on and I hadn't notice).

If you remember the cartoon series 'The Perishers' you are Cousin Worsof
Dirty McSquirty's cousin, he is the proverbial "person who is worse off than you". He lives in the sewer, and Dirty speaks to him through drain covers.
I think you should change your logon ID for a 3rd time :p

Has your sl been dealer serviced?
If so check your service sheet. Part of the service is to check the sbc control unit. Part of this check is to reprogramme sbc to increase service life.
If the warning message is on the dash, programming is not possible. A new sbc unit is required.
S.B.C brakes are very advanced, you get dry braking, system priming, B.A.S and E.S.P all built into one unit. The sbc unit price is in proportion to the price of the car when new. As is the labour cost to repair.
Buying a second-hand sbc unit maybe possible but not recommended as they are chassis coded to one vehcile to prevent theft.
Remember that brakes are very important on a vehicle. Without working brakes slowing the vehicle is a bit tricky!

This is correct. It "should" have its service life checked + software update/coding on every service. Shame this doesn't seem to be the case with a lot of cars we see. This part of the service seems to be missed, forgotton or not read properly:rolleyes:
