Sl55 R230 2003
Hi all

New to forum. Proud and very happy new owner of a 2003 SL55. What a car!

I’ve waited a long time to get one and it’s lived up to all of my expectations. Decided to take the plunge before I think prices rise higher.

Mine has a well used set of Michelins on it from 2014. Time for a change!

Could anyone in the know give me a recommendation?

Spoken to my trusted tire supplier and he’s given some great advice but I’d love to get peace of mind from a fellow 55 owner.

Shortlist for MB homologated matched pairs is:

Michelin Super Sports - highest price tire. I’m tempted but is it worth it?

Michelin Sport 3 - would prefer sport 4s but not an option.

Yokohama v105 - more cost effective. No experience with this brand.

Conti Sport Contact 3 - have run these on other cars and were solid.

P Zeros I have been warned off due to degradation.

And finally Falken F510s. These are much cheaper but non MO rated. They are highly recommended by my supplier.

Any advice hugely appreciated. Won’t be doing many miles each year so thinking I’ll go best of the best option, but not sure which one that is!

With thanks
SRMM

Look on the numerous online tyre sites for whats available tyre wise and the characteristics (handling, noise etc) v the price.

Shop around (black circles, asda and look at the websites of the individial fitters).

There are often saver codes to be had.
I saved nearly 200 last week getting tyres for my W251.

Never heard to degradation with P Zero.

Dont buy cheap.

As a fellow SL55 owner, I have always used Continentals, Michelins or Pirellis. I have had no problems with any of them. I think there are continentals on there at the moment. I do not do much mileage. Are you in the States ?

I use Falken 510s on my DL500 and they're quiet, grip well and affordable. My only concern is they wear quite quickly.

I've never had good experiences with Yokohama's on the past on other cars so won't use them.

Goodyear will be my next choice or perhaps Dunlop. Had very good experience of Dunlop's on our Cooper S.

Used to have a C63...
Yokohama tend to ride quite harshly, perhaps not suited to an SL.

As above, would also consider Goodyear options. What sort of mileage will the car do?

Thanks all for quick and informative responses! I’m in UK and will be doing 2/3K miles per year so not much at all.

Have not looked at Goodyear or Dunlop options will do that.

Pics will follow when back from service

Not seen them anywhere in my size (285/35/19).
As soon as I found 510s at 140 each delivered it was a no brainer.
Where did you get the 510's from?

Believe it or not Amazon...

Just beware - Malcolm fitted non standard sized tyres to his 230. It's running 245/40/19 front and 285/35/19 rear instead of 245/35/19 and 285/30/19.

Thanks. I did spot the slight difference in profile, mine are 285/30/19. The fronts are 255/35/19

The Dunlop SportMAXX RT2 are superb and if you are only doing 2-3k a year then they are a good choice, very quiet tyre

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 5 is also good (I use them)

Falken seem to have become quite expensive recently
