Ideally just this big bit: -

To be fair, I did it this way as I wanted it to last. Everything, including all the floor above it, was rubbed down, primed painted and treated with Bilt Hamber S50 before re-assembly.

Yes, it takes a bit longer but it gives you the opportunity to check everything over and it's a lot easier to replace any worn bushes and other bits while it's all on the deck. It's not too bad a job if done methodically but it won't be done in a day...

This is the way to go, if you want complete peace of mind with rust issues. Having said that everything helps... clean as best you can while it's in situ, then spray liberally with the protection of your choice, lash it on, don't worry about runs of sags in the finish.....LOL :)

Thought I’d update everyone. I have Just got my car back from Mercedes...they replaced the subframe for free and are sending it off to Germany for “forensic examination”. I’d advise anyone with similar issues to get in touch with head office. I have opened a case with DVSA and they are striving for answers. Shame I had such a bad experience as it’s such a lovely car!

So the rear subframe of my SLK completely failed on Saturday night. This caused me to lose control completely of my vehicle. Luckily I managed to stop it, but believe me it was very close to ending horrifically...reading posts around this I’m concerned there’s a trend. My MOT was carried out in March with no advisories. Serviced in January. My garage are shocked and upset about this, as there was no sign of corrosion and they believe it’s corroded on the inside. How can this happen and be ok? Any idea if I’d be able to take this further with Mercedes?[/QUOT

Welded an 171 slk subframe this week, replace a 204 subframe and just changing a 212 subframe. Interestingly it came up on repair forecasts on star.

Wow!! I hope mine will last until I need to sell.

I assume that's from TIPS? so is updated as problems arise as the cars get older?

It’s not in tips, just after a quick test at top of page on latest star update/machine.

It was on our newest star, updated our other stars and it’s on them too. :)

I will keep an eye out for it. I wonder if the % is the number of that sub model reported with that damage code.

I don't know either how STAR pick's it up.. but I imagine that with that kind of corrosion, there would be a certain amount of vibration travelling through the frame / chassis.

Once star is plugged into a car and does a short test, the chassis number is subject to a repair forecast, the forecast is shown at the top of the test, this comes from the factory and goes on some fault codes or vin number, once you read the forecasts, you and hit a thumbs up button to alert the factory that the forecast cure they give you was correct or thumbs down if it don’t cure it!!!! That’s how I see it anyway, probably wrong lol!!!
