i have a w114 which is getting quite a lot of rust bubbles and has to live on the street

Im not able to afford the many thousands of pounds that full restoration would need right now and im thinking of getting it plastic wrapped.

Does anyone have experiance of wrapping old cars?

and would the rust underneath be a big problem?

thanks

I would have thought it would compound the problem.

as above, I cant see how covering over a problem will make it go away, it will just get steadily worse, the final repair bill will be a lot more due to the bodywork rusting away underneath the wrap

If the body is in bad condition and not smooth it will show up under the vinyl and it wont stop the rust. You say you dont have the money but a wrap isnt cheap either, it will be at least a grand. Better of putting the money towards getting the bodywork sorted.

Its the rust underneath you need to stop NOW.
Wrapping it up will keep it nice and damp, it must be ventilated.
Waxoyl or Dinitrol or the like may help preserve it but you must smother all the rust prone surfaces.

Wrapping might help to hold the car together in latter years :D

Outside of that I can not see it's going to help either, you must decide treat the problem or in this case hide the problem

MB hide the problem by painting over contaminated and or rusty metal when they build the cars, so many do not get a very good start in life

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
I wrapped a perfectly good - but 8 year old - car 5 years ago.

Within 2 years there were little bubbles of rust everywhere.

I will make the problem MUCH worse, much quicker.

Do NOT do it.

Put the money for a wrap (Which cost me £1400) towards getting the work done - which should cost no more than £150 per affected panel.
