Hi there,

I have a annoying issue with my car... since the warm weather started iv been driving around with windows down and the car sounds like a VW beetle ( annoying thraspy/tappy noise ) while i do this.... sounds perfect with windows up by the way...... any ideas on what this is... im guessing its not normal.
I will take her to a Merc indy garage but dont want ripping off so would like an idea beforehand

Cheers all

sounds like something in the wheels or perhaps it is the wind whistleing through the seatbelts.

No, mainly ( or more noticable ) when accelerating... the best description i can give is the noise like a VW Beetle... only not as loud

sounds like a slight blow on the exhaust. flexible pipe perhaps? or manifold/downpipe gasket? may be worth also checking the engine/gearbox mounts etc for excessive movement

dads c220cdi doesnt seem noisy. its notchy/clunky to use but cant say ive ever heard any noises from it to speak of, unless hes been a little rougher than usual with it! maybe its worth checking that theres enough oil in the box? and also another reason to check engine/gearbox mountings. if memory serves me correctly, there was a run on loose/snapped mountings on w203's on here a few weeks back

on a manual, there will be a plug, probably looks identical to the drain plug (probably fitted with an allen key or possibly a torx bit) about half way up the side of the gearbox. drivers side if memory serves me. remove this bung and with the car level, the oil should trickle out slightly or be within a couple of mm of the hole. i often just push the tip of a plastic cable tie into the box if it doesnt trickle out. they usually do start to trickle or drip oil out of the bung though when its removed

usually with a bottle with a spout on to top it up. fill through the same hole you use to check the level. no idea what oil the gearbox takes im afraid.
