I have a 09 plate auto sport CDI, I have literally spent an absolute bomb over the past month getting the car mechanicly sound as it was a bit ruff when I got it. Now I have a bigger problem!!!! When driving the car seems to jump out of gear into manual even though it says on the screen I am in either 3rd 4th or 5th I have to put the car into manual and select 2nd and slow down to around 20-30 before it finds 2nd or 3rd then it drives normal until it happens again. I have just had the box services with new oil and filter so it's not low on oil, but it was only a quarter full when drained. It's pretty worrying as I know this could be another heafty bill heading my way!!! No faults showing on the diagnostic machine either, so I am assuming it's either the box or the torque converter. Has anyone experienced this before this is my first Merc and first automatic and it's driving me up the wall!!!!

What diagnostic machine are you using? It sounds very much like a conductor plate issue in which case a code will be logged.

It needs reading on a Mercedes Star machine ideally as generic readers cannot normally read gearboxes. Star can look deep in the box and report issues.

Roughly where are you? With an approximate location someone on here will almost certainly be able to recommend an indie with the appropriate diagnostig gear and expertise to help you. For example, if you are near Ashford Kent, I'd recommend Mastertech on Ellingham Industrial Estate in Ashford.

I am in Newcastle, yeah I was very surprised when there was no faults coming through. It's the first time I have owned an auto I am just terrified of spending more money on it seriously, it's had over a grand off me this month alone I have only had it 6 weeks :D

Just a quick update, I took the car to a local specialist who out the car onto a different diagnostic machine and there was a few faults however he checked the levels in the box and they were 2 liters short he thinks that has been the cause of the issue

Well he said he filled it through the dipstick he said he put in 7, no signs of leaks anywhere 2 liters is a lot of fluid to loose in two days without noticing any leaks I think he's just put the wrong amount in and never took any attention

7 litres is the total amount for an oil change on a 5g gearbox with a dipstick (with the torque converter as well ) . So is he saying there was no oil in the gearbox and torque converter at all ??

According to the specialist there was only 5 in he showed me the dipstick and it was well below the level it should be he put another 2 in and touch wood it's been fine so far, the faults that came up on the gearbox diagnostics all faults were gone after the top of of oil. I am no mechanic so apologies for my lack of knowledge.

I get it now , touch wood that is all now ok . Gearbox oil and filter should be changed every 40 thousand miles . Good luck , hopefully it's all good now .

Yes low oil will give these symptoms.

It will tend to be worse when cold and get better when warm.
