Have had the water in boot after heavy rain for a while now - as I had the day off today so had a look. The rubber along the 'weather trim' on both sides was perished with cracks in it and coming away on one side.

there was a considerable amount of gunk under each side and moisture so suspect this is the source of the ingress.

i poured 20 litres over the rear and there was only one area I could see the water coming in...

I’ve got similar cracking on the plastic trim around the boot seals of my E class . I would be interested to know what it will cost to replace

I replaced those bits on my W211.
Under £40 for both sides including new plastic pins.
I have a thread here somewhere, but the search function isn't playing.

Not had any luck locating these myself - mostly US ebay :(

Yes, I ordered them from the dealer and they arrived from Germany in around 5 days.

Part numbers looking at the EPC are (double check with the parts dept before ordering)
Nearside plastic cover A 210 693 01 33
Offside plastic cover A 210 693 02 33
Expansion rivets (count how many you need for each side if they aren't supplied with the above parts)
A 000 990 84 92

Well, the boot is still leaking with the new parts fitted. :(

Can only surmise that either the after market towbar is poorly fitted or the water is leaking under the weather trim still - there is enough of a gap where the rubbers meet from window gutter.

When I cured mine I took the plastic number plate panel off and renewed the poppers with the felt pads on , there's quite a few . Used black silicone on all the holes before refitting. Siliconed around the 3rd brake light and also ran a bead the length of the said panel at the top. I never saw water again.
