Anyone got any tips for this?

1. Removing the cover beneath the instrument panel. Besides removing three screws, is there anything else holding it in place? Is it just brute force needed to get it out from the heater assembly?

2. The manual says to remove heat shield and cross member under the car in order to release tension from cable. Has anyone managed without doing this?

This might be a dumb question, but why do you need to remove the pedal?

The ratchet has broken so it won't hold on and the plastic detent is broken and the release cable has disconnected

Update.......Had another look at this; the broken part was, called I think, the detent. It's just a bit of plastic that rests on a toothed quadrant, so maybe just there for the clicking sound. The brake not holding was caused by a spring slipping out and jamming the release lever in the release position, hence the floppy handle
