W211 recall

I was amazed today to receive a recall letter from Mercedes-Benz. Why? Well my car is a W211 E-class, built 2003 and first registered 2004 and they have decided to fit a new, complete electric sunroof because with some cars the glue holding in the glass in place has failed after 16 years! The service man at Inchcape Mercedes said he was surprised that I got the letter, but said he'd had a customer with a 2002 car phone that morning, and now me.

I suspect that there is a safety issue that Mercedes don't want to have to defend in any court case, but Wow, that's customer service beyond the norm.

WOW, was that a Panoramic roof or just the smaller sunroof?

I explained this in another post. The carmaker is obliged by law to provide support to vehicles and spare parts at least to the point of end of warranty of those parts extending to their ultimate final time of supply. Assuming a 2 year warranty period, for the 211 platform that means that recalls can happen upto 31/12/2022...

That is dedication to your products, I also just had great service from them, I emailed asking for the service History they have on their digital service records system and after scanning and sending them my logbook and photo id they emailed it over to me, so at least my car now has part service history

Update - Been to Merc today, and my car is OK. My sunroof was manufactured in 2003 before they changed the glue, so it is OK. I wouldn't have minded a replacement, as it comes with new seals, but I believe in the concept 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

I had the same letter for my 04 c55, but I'm not going to have it changed as I just think it will come back with bits of trim not fitted properly etc

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone else has had my problem. Opening the sunroof this morning I heard scrunching noise. Upon investigation it seems that the small slider that pushes the small wind deflector up has a broken plastic clip, where the spring is. Is it an easy repair or should i take to an Indy garage. Anyone know where I can get a replacement from, it looks like it's only held in by one screw ? Pictures attached. Thanks for any advice. Barrie.
