My trusty E320 has done 147.000 miles and goes well. i understand the timing chain should be changed at this stage . there is no sign of any noise from that area . what are the risks ?

same as with any belt or chain , it can go without warning so if its not been done before and you feel its best to renew it , then I say crack on ! you will only regret it if the worst does happen pal

Again .............. these are duplex chains unlike your M271 simplex chain and sprockets that failed as its a common fault on your engine and other manufacturers that use a simplex chain EG: Vauxhall Corsa VW Polo Peugeot 207 BMW N47 M57 engines especially bad.

:)
